Chapter six
I was sitting at a café table listening to Pillars song Frontline off my IPod touch while watching the people of New York walk by the window when the waitress walked up. She pulled out a pen and paper and started moving her mouth as though she was talking but I couldn't hear what she was saying over the volume of my music. I continued looking out the window until Jason grabbed my good hand and gave it a squeeze, causing me to look at him. Once I looked at him he reached up and gently pulled my ear buds out of my ears and nodded his head towards the waitress.
"Can I get you anything?" she asked. She looked maybe 20 with light brown hair and hazel eyes. I didn't really pay any attention to what she was wearing because I knew that we were never going to see her again, so I didn't think it was important to get a look at what she was wearing.
"Um... Just water." I replied. After she wrote down what I wanted she started to walk away until Jason stopped her.
"Um... Is there any way I could get a first aid kit? She hurt her hand and I want to treat it for her." Jason said pointing to my left hand that I had gently placed on the top of the table. Since Smith had shut it in the window, the back side of my hand had swelled up and had started bruising all over the back side of my hand and slightly on my knuckles.
"You don't have one in all those bags?" she asked pointing to the five bags we had sitting under the table.
"Sadly no, these were the only things that we could pack on short notice and we didn't plan on one of us getting hurt." Jason told her.
"I'll see what I can do." She replied as she walked away.
"You ok?" Jason asked looking at me.
"Yeah why do you ask?"
"You've just been really quiet ever since we left."
"Oh... I just can't believe that we're finally out of that place."
"Well we did and now it's just you and me." He said smiling while giving my hand another squeeze. I returned his smile without thinking about it and also squeezed his hand in return. While we were waiting on the waitress to return we listened to Frontline and watched the people pass by the café window.
"Here's the first aid kit, your water and your root beer." The waitress said placing our glasses in front of us.
"Thanks." Jason said taking a sip of his drink.
"Can I get you anything else?" She asked us.
"No I think we're good but thanks." I replied taking a big drink of my water. Having nothing else the waitress walked away while Jason and I sat drinking our drinks and listening to music. After we were done with our drinks we tipped the waitress, having gotten change for some of the bigger bills we were carrying, grabbed our bags and walked out. Because of my hand Jason insisted on carrying three of the five bags which made me feel very useless when we were walking down the street. He had his duffle over his shoulder, his backpack on his back and my soccer bag in his right hand because his left hand was holding onto my right one. Keeping me close to him which I didn't mind at all. I had my backpack on my back and my duffle bag over my shoulder since I could only keep my left hand cradled at my chest to make sure any passing people wouldn't hit it. Together we walked hand in hand down the sidewalk taking in the view of New York as we walked around.
"Hey can we check this place out?" he said pulling me gently towards a costume shop.
"Why not." I said walking with him in the direction of the shop door. When we walked in the shop all I could see were costumes, hats, gloves, shoes, and anything else you could need to change your look. After we put our bags next to the checkout desk like the cashier told us we started looking around at the different things that were in the little shop. We looked around for the next maybe seven or eight minutes, trying on different hats, glasses, and other things having a really good time laughing at each other and the things we tried on until I put on a fedora and a pair of glasses, which apparently gave Jason an idea. While I stood next to a rack of hats trying to figure out what idea he had, he darted to the other side of the store. When he got back he was holding two pairs of glasses and what looked like to sets of colored contacts.
