Chapter eight

Naturally I wanted to get as far away from him as I could, so I practically jumped out of my single booth seat, crashing into the waitress as I tried to make my way to the back of the restaurant. As Jason and I made our way through the tables, pushing waiters and customers out of the way, I heard Smith say something that I had secretly worried about since we left.

"I'm going to call the cops if you don't stop this instant!" he yelled as a loud clatter sounded from behind me. I didn't look back. I only moved faster, following right behind Jason while hoping that he had fallen on his face. While trying to keep up with Jason, I notice we were in the kitchen until I lost sight of him.

"Jason?" I called out as all the cooks in the kitchen shot dirty looks at me.

"He's most likely long gone." I heard Smith say from behind me. Immediately I took off looking for some place to hide. Unfortunately there was no place to hide in an open kitchen, so I ended up on the back side of an ingredients table with my back to racks of bread.

"What do you want?" I asked trying to stall long enough until I could find out where Jason was.

"You already know the answer to that." He said a smile on his face.

"You want to turn us in. For what? You've got no proof that we did anything and running away is not a crime."

"No but stealing is. I caught your friend sneaking into my office and taking something. All I have to do now is contact the police and he's gone. Then I'll have to find a way to get you out of there which shouldn't be hard since your saving grace will be gone."

"Saving grace?" I asked looking around, trying to find Jason.

"Yes your friend always seems to be around when you're about to get in trouble."

"Well then if that's true you know he's here waiting for my signal to save me." I said smiling as I heard my name whispered behind me. Jason was hiding in the racks of bread and had said my name while I was talking so that Smith wouldn't hear him.

"No he's not I heard the back exit door shut as I came in here." Smith said moving closer to the table.

"Really? Now!" I shouted signaling Jason.

"Duck!" He yelled as he came bolting out from behind the bread. I did so and watched as he dove over the table and crashed into Smith. Together they fell to the floor, Jason on top of Smith, who appeared to be unconscious. Knowing thing were going to go downhill very fast if I didn't get to Jason I quickly ran around the table and grabbed Jason's shoulder, but now before he was able to hit Smith in the mouth.

"Jason come on!" I said pulling on his shoulder harder, attempting to get him to move. Finally he got up and we bolted out the back exit and sprinted down the alley behind the restaurant. He was ahead of me, leading the way. Not long after we started running we had to ditch the alley and start running on the sidewalk with all the other very busy New Yorkers. As we ran, pushing people out of the way we gained several dirty looks and even some harsh language, but we didn't care because we were just focused on getting away from Smith.

"Down here." Jason called as he took off down another alley with me following his every footstep. When we got halfway down the alley he slowed down to a quick walk started looking around at the side of the building to our right.

"There they are." He said pointing at the fire escape that ran the length of the building. I follow his finger and saw our bags sitting on the first landing. Looking back at him I gestured for him to get them since I couldn't climb the ladder with only one hand. He quickly climbed up the ladder and started tossing them to me so I could try and catch them with my good hand before they crashed to the ground. Once all the bags were on the ground, he climbed back down, grabbed his bags and started walking towards the busy streets of New York.
