He stopped walking and stopped right in front of me and I stood up. He was about 6 inches taller than me and his gaze made me squirm. I backed up a bit and tried to walk away but all of a sudden, I felt hands on my arm. I looked down to see his hand wrapped roughly but not tightly around my arm as he started to pull me away. I gasped and tried to pull away from his grip but he stopped walked and looked down at me with a reassuring look. I calmed down a little and let him take me where he wanted. As we walked, I looked back to see that most people had their eyes on us. Some eyes were curious and others were jealous. I looked down at my feet as we kept on walking. Finally, after a few minutes, we stopped and he let go of my hand. I looked back and realized we had left the bonfire far behind. There was only a speck of light where the fire was. We were beside what looked like a tool-shed beside the lighthouse. I looked up at the boy. He was pacing in front of me with his hand going through his hair. He looked so apprehensive. Finally, he stopped and walked to me. He grabbed me by the shoulder and made me look into those ocean blue eyes.

“I love you.” He breathed. He had a French accent but I barely noticed that since was so surprised. I reeled back in shock.

“What?” I asked and leaned back on the tool shed to get as far from him as possible.

“I love you!” he repeated softly “You are my soul mate. You have no idea how long I have wanted to tell you that.” He closed his eyes and kissed my knuckles. The shock finally wore off and I roughly pull away from him.

“No!” I screamed. He looked at me with a calm expression but I was anything but calm. “You can’t love – what? I don’t understand.”

“Relax, Melody. I know things seem strange but believe me, it will work out. My name is Ashton River Defleur. I am a vampire prince and I love you with my very heart and soul.” He said and looked down at me. He looked so completely serious that I nearly fainted. Oh, he was a vampire now too? He had to be kidding!

“Can you please stop joking around with me? I don’t know who put you up to this but-”

“No one put me up to this! I do love you! You are my soul mate!” he replied stubbornly. I shook my head and started to back away. He was looking at me as if he were expecting my reaction.

“I don’t know you!” I screamed and started running. As I ran, I looked back and saw that he was gone but that didn’t stop me. It was a bad idea even thinking about going to the bonfire. I could have avoided everything. I kept running until I reached my car and then drove home. I was so tired of people making fun of me. A tear slipped down my face. Why did they do it? I have never been mean to them. I have never done anything to make them want to hate me. As soon as I was home, I changed into my pyjamas and made sure all the doors were locked before climbing into bed. I wrapped the blanket tightly around me as tears fell down my cheek. I couldn’t stop them. I shut my eyes tightly. They didn’t have enough fun teasing me so they send the new kid. I had never felt so hated before in my entire life.

“Shh sweetheart, don’t cry.” A voice said and I felt someone wipe the tear from my cheek and keep their hand there. My dad knew exactly when I needed him. I put my hand over his and I felt an electric spark pass through me. I shot my eyes open and came face to face with Ashton. His face held concern and I didn’t understand why. I pushed myself as far away from him as possible and tried to move his hand off my face but he was too strong. My heart raced and my breathing rate quickened. What was he going to do to me?

“How did you get in here?” I asked.

“Love, I am a vampire.” He said as if he were stating the obvious. Again with the vampires? Do these people never give up?

“Can you back off, please?” I asked since he was only inches away. It was making me feel very uncomfortable.

“I don’t see why I should.” He said and smirked. The left side of his face drew up and I could see the dimple there. I had to admit, he was really cute.
