“Honey, are you okay?” my dad asked. His eyebrows were knitted together in concern. I nodded dazedly and stood up. How did Ashton get away so fast? I went to the kitchen and grabbed a glass for some water. My parents followed me.

“Mom, dad, how did you come up with my nickname? You know, bright eyes.” I asked steadily. My mom gave my dad a what – is – going – on – here? Look.

“We didn’t give you that name. When you were 5, a nice young boy told us that you had bright eyes. We thought it was cute so we started to call you that. Why?” she asked. Concern was laced in her voice. My heart dropped to my stomach and I rubbed my nose numbly. What was going on? I ignored her question and asked my own.

“Did he have brown hair and blue eyes?” I asked as my heart pounded in my chest. What if he was telling the truth? What if he really did know me?

“I believe so, yes.” She said and I nodded. That didn’t mean he was the one. I shook my head to clear my thoughts.

“Okay, I’m going to bed.” I said and walked towards the stairs.

“Mel-”

“No, no.” I said, cutting my dad off “I’m fine, really.” And then, without another word, I ran to my room and shut the door. At least he was gone and I had the night to myself to think things through but boy was I wrong.

“I told you.” A voice whispered in my ear. In shock, I stumbled and fell forward. With a gasp Ii braced myself to hit the floor but it never came. I looked up to see Ashton smirking. I realized that I was about 6 inches off the ground. Ashton pulled me to my feet and smiled his little boy smile.

“How did you..?” I asked as he kept smiling.

“I keep telling you! I am a vampire.” He said.

“Fine, let’s say you were. Now, explain this to me. I don’t understand.”

“Okay, I have known you were my soul mate since I was little. If it were up to me, I would have introduced myself to you when I was little so we could have been friend and avoided all this and went straight to the things couples do but nope. My Father told me we had to let you live a normal life so I sulked about you for most of my life. Anyways, we do know each other, well, at least our families do. I have tones of pictures of your great grandmother Elizabeth at my house.”

I gasped in surprise. How did he know about my grandmother? He was starting to scare me. He saw the look on my face and smiled.

“She was my great grandfather’s soul mate but the only difference with you and her was that she accepted him right away.” He said a little sourly.

“Wait….but doesn’t that mean you are my cousin?” I asked in a creeped out tone. There was no way I was going to date my cousin. YUCK. Ashton burst out laughing. It was one of those slapping like a stupid seal with no sound coming out kind of laughs. I waited for him to calm down and prayed that my parents hadn’t heard his booming laughter. Finally, he stopped laughing and wiped his eyes.

“No, they never ended up together, her family split them apart. They did not believe in soul mates. And then they had their separate families but they were never truly happy. That’s when she died…well, she was murdered.” He said and looked out the window. He seemed pissed off. Suddenly, he spun around and grabbed my shoulders, tightly. “I will never let that happen to you…to us.” There was determination on his face.

“Why are you here now?” I asked, not believing anything he was saying but I wanted to see how far he would go. He seemed like a pathological liar to me.

“Because you need to be protected and who better than your vampire boyfriend?” he said with a wink.

“Okay, one, I am not your girlfriend and two, what am I being protected from?” I asked and crossed my arms over my chest.

“You will be my wife one day so shut up.” He said and my mouth dropped. He ignored that and went on talking.

“You need to be protected from Thor, the demon king.” He stated. I burst out laughing. The demon king? Wow his story got harder and harder to believe by the second. Ashton stared at me, waiting for me to calm down.

“Okay, let’s say I believe you. Why is this Thor person after me?”

“Because you are a pure blood. In the prophecy, the pure blood defeats the demon king and that is why he killed your grandmother. She was also a pure blood, hence the red hair. The prophecy states that the pure blood has red hair and green eyes.” He said with a smile. “Oh, have you started to experience shockwaves?”

“What?” I asked.

“Shockwaves. Your powers will start developing soon and you will experience little shockwaves of that power. I can’t wait, it will be so cool.” He stated. I stared at him. He was joking. He had to be joking! I was not going to believe him. He was a pathological liar.

“I’m done.” I said putting my hands in the air “I’m going to bed. You can do whatever you want.” I said and climbed into bed.

“Ah, yes. Wouldn’t want to keep you up.” He said with a smile “I’ll tuck you in.”

I sighed and nodded. There was no way I was fighting with him, I was way too tired to do that. He sat on my bed and stroked my hair.

“This is really weird.” I stated as he continued to stroke my hair. He was a complete stranger who barged into my house and now, I was letting him tuck me in. Ashton smiled.

“Don’t worry, it will get normal soon. I’ll tuck you in every night.” He said and kissed my forehead. I felt safe and at peace. If there really was a Thor out there, there was no way he could harm me. Maybe he wasn’t so bad but there was still no way I was going to fall for his ‘soul mate’ routine. I shut my eyes and tried to sleep. After a few minutes, I turned to my side. Why was my bed so itchy all of a sudden? I flipped over again and laid on my back.

“Urgh!” I said in a frustrated sigh and Ashton laughed.

“Can’t sleep love?” he asked in his amazing accent. I pouted at him and shook my head. He laughed and stroked my cheek.

“I’ll sing to you.” He sing and I nodded curiously. I wanted to hear him sing.

I had to admit he was an amazing singer and that accent made it so much better. His was voice was dreamy and I knew I’d have no problem falling asleep if he sang to me every night.

I felt my eyes droop a bit but I tried to keep them open. Ashton chuckled and brushed his hand over my eyes, assuring me it was okay to close them. I did as he motioned and sighed in peace as he continued to sing.

I felt him stroke my cheek at the last part and his voice grew softer as if the words meant a lot to him.

It made me happy that he sang to me. But by that time, I was at the point where I was asleep and could still hear and feel things but I couldn’t respond. I felt his lips on my forehead and then on my eyelids and the on my nose and then they hovered over my lips. I could feel the tension and the pull.

“Not yet, love. Our first kiss will happen when you are fully awake and when you love me as much as I love you.” He whispered and then with one final kiss on the forehead, he was gone and I was asleep.
