It was sunny that day in Magnolia. The people busting themselves under the scorching sun, the birds singing where they lay nestled in their nests. The forest sung with life, and Gray Fullbuster, the one member of Fairy Tail that wasn't in the hallowed halls of it guild building, was suffering on a solo quest.
Gray had believed the jewel was worth the hastle of battling the hoard of Volcans which had barricaded the street in and out of Lynin. But he had thrown that belief out the window when he was thrust against a tree, his bruised head lolling to the side as his eyes struggled to stay open.
He struggled to get up, his legs weak and sweaty beneath his pants, the only piece of clothing the ice mage still wore. He felt useless as he watched another ice make projectile evaporate into vapor and mingle with the oxygen that he struggled to breath in as he panted.
His face was torn up with several small cuts zig zagging across his forehead and a gash across his lips, which slowly bled out.
Despite having fought off, and killed, a majority of the hoard, Gray found himself cornered into the tree behind him. He spat into the dirt beneath him, keeping a prideful facade and challanging the Volcans forward.
When the head Volcan picked up the mage by his spikey black hair was when the air was broken by a defiant battle cry, and what looked like a sword tore down the Volcan's arm with a squish and landed on the dirt with the mage, releasing Gray from its grasp.
Gray looked on in awe at his savior, her dark raven like wings spreading at least three feet in both directions. Her dark locks blended and melted into her wings, and the side of her blade was stained with blood. The dark hilt was adorned with tiny skulls, which looked rather cat like.
The girl took her battle stance, her combat boots digging into the soil beneath them. She charged at the Volcans, hacking off limbs and tearing through torsos.
A strong, meaty Volcan, the head of the hoard, stood before her at last, and knocked the blade from her hand, the blade itself flying backward and landing beside Gray.
She groaned, crossing her arms over her chest with her legs spread apart; a stance that reminded Gray in that moment of Ice Shell. A dark aura enveloped the girl, and some Volcans began to run in fear while a few that had been too injured to move stayed petrified in their spots. It was then that Gray noticed his hands trembling as well.
"Thanatos's Will!" The girl shouted. Her chest glowed an almost purple color, strands of energy swimming out of her chest and enveloping the Volcans. They froze, their bodies thinning and aging as the purple energy sucked away at their life forces, taking whatever energy they had and bringing it back toward the girl's chest. The last of the Volcans fell to the ground, lifeless, and the glow simmered down in sparks that resembled vaporous smoke.
The girl turned around, her blood red eyes intense as a wolf that had found its prey. They scanned down the mage, and landed on his hands, which he tried to hide beneath him. The girl smiled, disappointed and yet not expecting anything else. She rolled her head, her wings folding into her and then disappearing.
"W- who a- are you?" Gray asked.
"You're just like everyone else," she said, not answering his question, as she picked up her sword.
"I'm Gray Fullbuster, an ice mage from Fairy Tail. Who-or what- are you?" Gray repeated.
"My name..." she hesitated for a moment as she sheathed her sword before turning to the stranger, "My name is Tristitia. And I... I'm a god slayer. A death god slayer." She turned away from the mage and began to walk away.
Gray's eyes widened in amazement.
What did she just say?! Death god slayer?! A lost magic?! The mage stood up, following behind the strange girl."Woah... that's a lost magic art. How'd you learn it?"
"Unfortunately, I was born with these powers. "
"Really... so what can you do?" He asked, genuinely fascinated since he had never met a god slayer before.
(A/N- This is before Tenrou Island)
"Whole bunch of complicated things I am not sure you'd understand. And even then, you'd think they're fascinating when in reality, they're a curse.""Uhm... your wings?"
"A gift from the God of death, Thanatos," She gestured to her back, and Gray noticed the tips of black wings etched into her skin.
"They are fascinating," Gray said, finally soliciting a reaction from the girl, who turned over her shoulder and stared at him questioningly. Digging into the pockets of her jacket, which she wore despite the heat, and pulled out a rolled up spindle of medical bandage, handing it to the boy. He nodded thankfully, taking the bandage and she turned around.
"So... the Gods are real." Gray stated fact as he bit off a strip of the medical tape and applied it to the cuts over his brow.
"Of course gods are real. If they weren't, why would there be god slayers?"
"Right...So... if you have so much magical power, why do you need a sword?"
She staggered, clenching onto the hilt of the sword. "It's an enchanted sword I named Nyx. It can turn into anything I want... My little sister gave it to me..."
She looked over her shoulder again before picking up her step. Silence quickly followed. The sun started to go down and the temperature started to cool.
"Uh... Hey, do you have a camp?" Gray asked, finally breaking the silence after what seemed like hours. Tristitia shook her head. "Well, you are welcome to stay in mine, but I only have one sleeping bag."
"Thanks. But don't worry about me, I barely get any sleep."
"Oh... okay. "
Gray tried to start a fire, now magically fully clothed, but his attempts failed miserably. Where is Natsu at a time this? Gray thought, mumbling under his breath. NOOO! I DON' T NEED THAT FLAME FOR BRAINS!
Then a pair of hands took the two sticks and Tristitia rubbed them together. Within seconds, the two had a fire.
The two sat silently around the toasty fire, each too uncertain how to break the ice. It stayed like that until the only sounds to be heard were Gray's snores.
