"Rosie can you come over here honey?"

"Yes?" she asks in her usual tone of voice, squeaky but quiet as she enters my room.

I bend my knees, come down, to face her properly, and take her hands in mine.

"Listen, you aren't happy here are you?" I ask questioningly.

"No...well...I don't know...mommy's mean to me"

"I know, and that is why I am going to take you to a different place, to make you happy!"

"Where are we going?" I can see the fear in my little sister's eyes as she says this.

"New York" I whisper, hoping she won't freak out, even though she has no clue what New York is.

***

My parents bought the whole story of going shopping pretty quickly, they don't even care. We could have said "Mum, dad, we're gonna go jump off a cliff, see you" and they wouldn't even try to stop us (maybe that's a bit of exaggeration but you get the idea).

The last thing we saw coming out of the house was my dad smoking a cigarette, the smoke swirling around, causing the whole kitchen to smell and me to wrinkle my nose.

My mum however, was reading something on her phone, with a bottle of wine in her hand, of course.

Nothing new.

I need to get my parents help though, that is why I've asked my best friend to tell the police about my parents once there is no sign of our disappearance left.

We step onto the train, which will take us to Ohio. I did a lot of research and it was the cheapest to take two trains rather than one. Michigan to Ohio, and then Ohio to New York. And after that, is the part where I'll start to worry. We'll have no place to stay, and I can't waste money on a hotel, I need that money for food and water...Hopefully there will be somewhere dry and warm to spend...maybe even a few nights.

"Come on Rosie, we can sit down here" I gesture her to sit down on one of the old, torn seats in the train. I couldn't afford a more luxurious one, so this one will have to do.

I take out our cuddly blanket, covered in pink polka dots, which was dropped of by our house once, from some aunt we don't know, she taped a little note to the lid of the box, saying:

"From your grandma , she'll be happy, looking down from heaven, seeing you have it, believe me". Lots of Love, aunt Mary x

To this day I wonder how our aunt (that I remind you, we don't even know) knows that our grandma would like us to have it. We never met her either, she died in a plane crash a few years back. Maybe if she was alive, we'd have somewhere to go...

In a few minutes time I notice my little sister is asleep on my lap. No wonder, she barely got any sleep last night, our neighbour decided to hang up pictures in the middle of the night and made loads of noise. Ah, we should have a peaceful sleep tonight....We should....but will we?

***

"Passengers, please make your way out." the sudden voice over the intercom causes me to fully wake up.

Rosie wasn't asleep when I opened my eyes, she was chatting away with the lady beside us.

"Oh hello, darling, sleep well?" She asks in a friendly voice and smiles widely.

"Hello, yes, thank you" I smile weakly as I feel a sudden wave of fear role over me again.

We haven't bought a ticket for the next train yet.

What if they won't let us?

What if something goes wrong?

Knowing my luck, it will.

"Miss, do you know which train to take to New York City?"

"Oh sweetheart, I don't sorry, my husband is picking me up from here, but that's where I'm heading of too!"

"That's all right, thank you anyway" I reply politely but probably can't hide the disappointment that's creeping onto my face.

"Hm, I'm sure he wouldn't mind if we took you with us!" she suddenly seems to be fizzing up with excitement. " I know your parents probably warned you about strangers but I'll show you my id"

She reaches into her purse and shows me a little white card, with all her details on it and on the other side, shows where she works.

My mouth drops open as I read it.

"Oh my! Do you work in "Laquer's", the famous fashion designing company?" I exclaim.

She nods and smiles, "Yes, dear, I do, I'm in charge of all the advertisement and all that" she explains.

I quickly check one more time, to see if the card is real and it is.

Surely this can't lead to anything worse that has happened to us?

A car sounds better than an old train!

***

After we've met her husband (which is as lovely and friendly as Miss. Berry herself) we pop into the car and we're off!

A few more hours and we'll be there....Our dream place to live...
