-Alex-
She stares at me intently, with those beady blue eyes of hers. She's trying to find the answer to her question. If it was that easy, she'd know already, but I can't tell her without spilling out all the other information about me. It's too risky. I considered telling her everything, but I've made a deal, a promise. This promise, is one that I have to keep, and the secret must stay hidden below everything else. I've swore to one person before that I will never let anything slip out,and now this human, right in-front of me, I told that I will. It's not like I wouldn't trust Chloe with things, it's just that this involves her and Rosie. I'll go rolling downhill with a thud, a bang and quite possibly a fatal accident no matter what I do. But if I think fast, then there's a door in-front of me and the key is to get away from here and hide.
"So" she begins unsurely. I drop my head slightly, realising I'm still gripping her wrist.
"It's a long story. I'll explain, everything, but promise me one thing." I lift my eyes back up at her.
"What?"
"Don't interrupt, listen to all I have to say and don't run away" I list.
"That's three things." she raises an eyebrow playfully and I chuckle. "But okay, I promise."
"How about we go to Central Park? We'll find a quiet spot and talk. It's only a 5 minute walk from here." I ask.
She gives me an approving nod and I pull her from the door before opening it and the pair of us head downstairs.
***
I lead her through the aisles of the humongous park, filled with trees, benches, lakes, rivers and people buzzing around. This is the perfect place to clear your mind, it's calm and stress relieving. If it's windy, your negative thoughts get blown away, if it's sunny they get burnt down and if it's raining they get washed away. No matter what the weather is like, this place is wonderful.
"I love it here. I lived quite far from our park in Michigan so I never really got to go there. Honestly, I could live here my entire, interacting with the animals 24/7 would be my thing." she sends me a shy smile.
I laugh a little and gesture her to sit down on one of the old fashioned, hazel benches. She happily takes a seat, crossing one leg over the other.
"Aha so this is a formal meeting I got myself into?" I wink at her.
"Of course Sir, sit down please" she plays along with the joke. We both chuckle and I take a deep sigh before deciding I should probably get on with what we are here for.
"So"
"So"
"Please don't get mad at me"
"I won't." she assures me, " At least I'll try my best not too." she adds in a whisper but I still catch what she said.
" Okay, so, it's a very long story, as I have told you before, today" I begin, cautious while speaking each word, "I'll start from the beginning..." and there it goes, I'll have to let her into my life, and also her life, the life she doesn't know she is living.
"This may be like throwing you into a sea storm, unable to swim, but I feel like it's still a suitable way to start..." I glance at her for any sense of nervousness but she seems pretty laid- back at the moment, "The woman who you thought was your mother since the age of four is not really your mother, nor is your father the real one, they're you're fake parents".
"What?" she gasps, not believing my words.
"Remember what you promised?" I scold her, narrowing my eyes.
"Sorry, sorry, I'll try not to interrupt again" she holds up her hands in defence.
"Anyway, what happened was that before all this, when you were four and Rosie was a little baby, your family was in a car crash." her eyes widen, "As in, your real family", I correct myself, "Your parents had been brought to the hospital. Sabrina, your "mother", saw her chance while all the ambulances and police rushed around to help the wounded. You see, she never wanted to be a nurse, the payment wasn't good. She wanted to be rich, badly. An idea struck in her mind when she saw that you were holding your palm against your forehead and Rosie was crying. Sabrina told the doctors she'd take care of you, but instead, took you away.
Her eyes seem to be popping out her head by now, she must think I'm a psycho or something. I tried to ignore that and continued on with my explanation.
"She brought you and your sister to a totally different hospital to get you checked. Guess what? You had amnesia. I suppose you don't remember anything, because if you did I wouldn't be here telling you this. Four is young but not too young not too recall moments of your life. Sabrina did nothing to help you remember. I mean, why would she? Her goal was to use you and Rosie to become rich. Now you're probably thinking how on earth would she do that? Well, this sounds even more crazy but some wealthy family in India wanted slaves. Yes slaves. They offered a million. One whole million for just two people. This was her intention, as cruel and untrue as it sounds, it's the truth. She had to wait until Rosie turned 5, that is why she didn't complete her plan and-" I get cut off once again.
"OH MY GOD" she screams, attracting confused people and earning us annoyed glares from the public enjoying their free time, " I'm sorry, but what? This is pathetic, what do you mean?Who would do that? How do you know her?! I clasp a hand over her mouth, preventing her from further shouting.
"Let me finish. This is where I come in. When you ran away, just days before her plan was going to come into reality, she was desperate. Sabrina knew you were in New York because of your cork board full of pictures. She immediately found out you were gone and followed after you all the way." another loud gasp escapes her mouth, she's in shock, I don't blame her, but Chloe asked for the information so that's what she's getting, " I bumped into her in Towns Square...The same day I knocked you over with my skateboard...We made a deal. She briefly told me that she's pay me if I invited you two to my house...So I did...I needed the money...About that I'll tell you later...That night you stayed over at our house I received a phone call from Sabrina. She then told me all this that I'm telling you now. You must think I'm just as cruel as her...But the reason for that...Was the money that I needed badly. I'm ashamed, very actually. Don't think I'm still in this thing, we need to leave New York and hide.
She stares at me, those eyes burning imaginary holes in me.
"I still don't understand everything..." her voice is surprisingly calm once again.
"I know, there's more to it...So just to fill in the gaps of my monologue I-" I notice a woman walking towards us in the distance, cigarette in hand. Only one person can I recognise from such far away.
Sabrina.
