-Chloe-
I glance back once more behind me, to find the woman still staring with those vivid green eyes, ready to burn a hole through me as soon as she gets her hands on me. I can't believe she's here. How did she find out? Maybe it's some evil plan? Sounds like it. I finally realise I am basically dragging Alex and Rosie behind me and I come to a stop, before stepping in-between two houses, where I know we'll be safe. You never know, she might not be alone, the police could be around. The three of us are now panting heavily after that sudden sprint through the crowded city of New York. Of course we couldn't get away without people throwing rude comments at us, as a result of their irritation. I don't really blame them, I would be quite annoyed too if some strangers were causing mayhem in the already chaotic streets.
"What's wrong, what did you see?" Alex gasps for air.
"M-my mother..." I stammer, also breathing as if it's my last two minutes alive.
"You've seen mommy?" Rosie asks, wide-eyed - "I know she wasn't kind but can we say hi" she pleads.
"No!" I literally scream and I cause both of them to jump - "Sorry, I didn't mean to...I'm just...We have to get out of here, I have no idea how our mom found us. It makes no sense, I left no clue! Well at least that's what I think..." I sigh, this isn't going right already.
"Ok, do you think she's been following us or not?" he questions, clearly just as anxious as me.
"I don't know, the last time I looked back, she was standing there, staring, I'm sure my mom has recognised us, but is she following?" I pause for a moment- " Well there's a high chance that she is and I'm afraid there's a possibility my mother isn't alone...I'm not 100% sure but this visit isn't coincidental so she must be fully prepared. We have to think fast." I finish.
"The cafe is right here, so we can just pop in and get bagels and coffee, well a milkshake for Rosie, since this was the plan, but I promise you we'll be out in 3 minutes and head to the closest taxi. There's loads of them around here, we can catch one in no time" he assures me.
"Right, okay, but we really have to hurry" I nod in agreement.
We bustle into the small cafe filled with satisfied customers. The seats are a vibrant red colour- I learned that red makes you hungry- so that's most likely why, and the tables are a light beige. The walls are painted in a calming blue colour with a single, silver stripe running along the top, outlining the ceiling on which hangs a sparkly, gold chandelier. I look around, taking in the sight, but remember we are not here for sight seeing anymore. We have run away, because of my mothers unexpected visit. I don't even notice when Alex bought everything due to being too busy checking out an old painting on one of the cafes blue walls. Alex hands me the latte, causing me to bring my attention back to him and my sister. Now we have to run with food and coffee in our hands, can it get any worse? Oh I sure think it can.
In this moment a tall figure enters the building. Our mother.
"She's in here" I shriek quietly.
"Let's go to the staff, the must have a back door." Alex lowers his voice too.
In that moment she spots us and begins to head over. We run through the corridor and enter the room which is labelled "STAFF ONLY". I never knew I would have to ignore that warning ever in my life, there wasn't a reason why I would have to enter this room, that is, until today.
Thankfully the room is empty. I take back the words - I have zero luck in my life - because this is plain luck here, if there was someone in here, we would get kicked out and my mother would be able to murder me then. I wonder why it's not locked though.
Rosie points her finger to a grey door with a large handle in the corner that says "EXIT" and we hurry towards it.
Once the fresh air hits my face I can finally think properly, without any distraction. She's in there, only a few meters away, we have to escape.
Alex leads us to the taxi, parked on the side of the road. The moment we get in a piece of paper blocks the sun that shone through the window. It says "I'll find you" on it in dark blue. Well she's not only well prepared for every situation but is also great at tracking people down...Now what if she follows us in another taxi? Or some other form of transport? She decides to go the opposite way, and walking not driving, thank goodness.
"Wow seriously...Just saying but this is getting creepy." Alex examines the note on the window.
"Yes, it sure is, I'm afraid..." I mumble.
"Listen, I'm sorry, I thought we lost her far behind and I've no idea how we got found" he apologises.
"No, don't be sorry, it wasn't your fault. It was mine, I should have taken the plane to some other state, like California for example, which would be further away. I'm dumb. I just don't understand how she knew we were here? Maybe I left..." I stop in shock.
I know what I left. That's what I was missing the whole time. Under my bed back in Michigan is my beloved, old...
