The next morning I woke up with a feeling of foreboding in the deep pit that is my stomach.
My first morning waking up on Earth, surrounded by strange beings, in a strange city, with a purpose that could potentially kill me one way or another.
Shut up Emilia, you do not need those thoughts in your head on your first day of work. Work. Oh shiz!
I Just remembered that Nick set us up with fake identities to give us a head start on Earth.
Ugh, I'd better get up and study
Emilia: Earth Identity
Name: Amber Chase
Age: 19
Hobbies: Horse Riding, Swimming, Writing
Work: Starbucks
I scoffed, cliché. I had heard all about Starbucks from training. Of course Nick would have me work there.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
"So, you must be Amber, I'm Leo. Your shift starts in 5. I'm assuming you know how everything works, judging from your resume, of course."
"Of course."
"Sweet! I'll leave you to it."
He disappeared behind the side door with 'Manager' written on the outside of it.
He's kinda cute, for a human that is. No! Do not let your mind run away with those kind of thoughts Em. That's the last thing you need.
I shook my head to rid myself of those foul thoughts. Now to get to work.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
"1 cappuccino please."
"Coming right up." Humans are so easy to please. You just, make them a drink and then ... BOOM, there happy as happy can be. Pathetic.
"Here you are," I put on a fake smile.
"Thank you so much."
This went on and on and on. I wanted to leave, then and there. Then this guy came up. He was interesting. There was something 'off' about him. I look into his mind for a moment and I saw what what was wrong. He was so incredibly, human. I smiled to myself, this was going to be fun.
"So, what can I do for you?"
"You can get me the usual thanks."
"The usual?"
"Uh, well, yeah. You know, usual? In English it means: normal? Any of this ringing a bell?"
"Yeah it does. But what is your usual?"
"Aha, I see, a noob. Well newbie. I suggest you ask your manager what my usual is because I'm not going to tell you. And I suggest you do it snappy because there is quite the line up behind me."
I honestly couldn't be bothered walking all that 50 metres to the managers office, so I just looked into his head.
"No need," I smiled sweetly at him, "one double choc cappuccino with and extra of cream and sugar, coming right up."
"What the- Witch! You totally read my mind then."
"That's physically impossible. I'll be right back with your order. Don't want to keep the customers waiting."
He eyed me sceptically, watching my every move as I whipped up his order.
"There you are."
"Hmph!' And he stormed off.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Later on that day, when I was walking back to my hotel, I passed an alleyway that had a strange feel to it. Being that person in all the horror movies of Earth, I decided to investigate. It was a dark alleyway, and the feeling was not the sort I normally get around humans. It's Vaielan, I realised. Well, arresting rogue Vaielans was my actual job, so into the dark alleyway I went. I sensed movement further down, and turned on a flame in the palm of my hand, illuminating the path ahead. There was a man there. He was tall, and well built. He was hiding from me, and with good reason too.
"P-please, I j-j-just want t-to stay, please d-don't take m-m-me." He pleaded. Anyone else would have fallen for his pleas. But we had been taught not to fall for such nonsense.
"By order of the King and Queen of Vaiela, you are under arrest, and hereby sentenced to face the court of their majesties for treason against your planet. Alyah!" Because of Alyah's abilities, she could hear me from Earth. There was a blinding white light, and the man was taken from Earth to face the Vaielan court.
Coming out of the alleyway I was met with an unwelcome sight. It was that idiot human who gave me trouble at the cafe and another man who I assumed to be his friend.
"Well well well, look who it is. It's the witch, in a dark alleyway. Looking for a victim to turn into a toad are we?" They both seemed to find this very amusing, and clutched their sides with laughter.
"Oi! Back off you two! Go find some friends." This came from a strong looking girl with medium length white blonde hair.
"Go find some yourself Karly." But they backed off nonetheless.
"Thanks."
"No problem. Those two can be real morons. I'm Karly. I work the morning shift at Starbucks. What about you? I think I saw you at Starbucks as well."
"Yeah, I work the morning shift there also. I'm Amber." Quickly remembering my fake identity. "Who were those people?"
"Oh, them? That's William and Brody. They like to pretend they've got friends. All they do with their lives is harassing girls, especially pretty ones."
"Huh." They sounded like Bobby. "Well, in reality, their just gits."
"My thoughts exactly. Hey, do you wanna grab a bite to eat? Seeing as though Its nearly lunchtime, and you look as though you don't have anywhere else to be or anyone else to be with. And no-one should be by themselves in New York." She flashed me a smile.
"Sure, I'd love to. But please, no coffee."
She laughed. "Uh, no. Seriously, after working in Starbucks all morning, just the smell of coffee makes me sick."
"Yeah, same."
"C'mon, I know an amazing place for lunch, and it's not far from here so we can just walk."
"Sounds good." So we walked and talked. All the while I felt terrible inside, knowing that everything I told her, and everything she made me out to be, was fake.
