we have been walking for several hours now. the sun started to come up a few hours ago.

"so you and your mom live alone?" i ask michael.

"sort of. at the moment she's dating a guy who is the ceo of some big beer brewery, so she's over at his place a lot. i forgot his name though," he says shyly.

i laugh at his forgetfulness, and my hand brushes his.

his soul-searching green eyes meet mine, and we just stare at each other for several solid moments.

finally, i look away, and we keep walking.

"so are you going to tell me what your nightmare was about?"

"no, i can't," he reiterates.

"yes you can," i say, stopping in my tracks and doing the same to him by grabbing his shoulders.

"this thing, no i really can't."

i sigh and keep walking.

he doesn't follow me, and i turn around to look at him.

"i'll see you later, michael," i say to him, starting to walk away.

i expect him to run after me and tell me what's wrong, what's tearing him up inside.

but i'm wrong, as i walk home alone in the cold, i feel the ice taking me over again, cutting me off from the rest of the world.

a/n: okay this chapter was really really short, i know, but it's very important in the development of michael and calum.! you may never find out what michael's actual nightmare was, but you'll find out sort of about what caused it and whatnot.

also the last part of the chapter where calum is describing him leaving, what i meant is calum feels like he finally found a friend he can confide in, but if the friend can't do the same, then he'll just leave and be "invisible" again before he can get hurt.
