chapter one: eloise rosewood

***

its never really any fun when you find out the person you've claimed to love for so long doesn't love you back. it wasn't the greatest feeling in the world but, then again, it wasn't really the worst. eloise felt neutral about it as she stared at the wall above her with the sound of the music from the record player filling the room and her door locked. but, before we get ahead of ourselves - let's start from the beginning where poor eloise isn't heartbroken. back to the beginning before everything took a turn for the better. . .or maybe even for the worst.

"Matthew Espinosa," the name escaped the teachers lips as she stared down at the roster in front of her.

"Here," a boy raised his hand, high in the air, walking toward the teacher. She nodded after finally finding him and directed him to his seat. As soon as Matthew sat down in that one person desk, he finally felt it. The rush of being a middle schooler finally caught up to Matthew and he was excited. Fresh out of elementary school where all the younger kids were and he was now in the big league - aka, sixth grade.

The teacher called different names which consisted of one other Matthew and at least three different Vanessa's.

"Eloise Rosewood," the teacher read off the paper and to the front of the line came a short, smiling girl with black cat-eye glasses and an A-line dress. Her socks had an adorable lace ruffle added to the top that went right over her black strap on shoes. She was completely unique compared to all the girls with their plaid dresses or their overalls. She didn't seem to care and that bugged Matthew for some odd reason. He stared at her as she stood at the front of the line smiling. They were 11 now - why was she dressing like she was still in the first grade?

It wasn't like she could fit in little girls clothes considering she wasn't the skinniest. But she didn't seem to care about that either!

Everyone stared at her weirdly. The girls made a disgusted face and some of them laughed at her. The boys ignored her outside whenever she tried to say hi to them.

No one wanted anything to do with Eloise Jeanie Rosewood and they all knew exactly why:
She was weird.

The teacher pointed her finger over toward the desks as Eloise's eyes followed wherever it went. She nodded as she finally understood where to go and she walked over to Matthew's area.

His heart immediately began to race as her footsteps came closer to him and he heard them stop behind him but he didn't want to turn around to see where she settled so he just stared straight ahead until he felt a finger tapping his back. His eyes widened in fear.

"Hey," she said, innocently.

"Hi," Matthew mumbled, not daring to look back at her - mostly because he didn't want to be seen talking to her and he was trying to convince himself no matter how much he knew it wasn't true that she wasn't in the desk behind him.

"I'm Eloise," she introduced herself and he could practically hear the smile in her voice.

"That's nice," he replied as the teacher continued to go down the list of names. How long was this damn list of kids?

"What's your name?"

"Didn't you hear it when she called it out?" He asked rudely.

"Oh," she muttered. For a little while, silence followed her mutter and they just sat there, Matthew still not even glancing at Eloise - not even once. "I just wanted to ask just incase you wanted to uhm. . .introduce yourself."

"Does it look like I want to?"

"I wouldn't know cause you won't even look at me where I can see your whole face," she replied with that innocent tone of hers once again. Matthew huffed, rolling his eyes in the process as he turned to her. Their eyes met and Eloise soon felt a fluttering in her chest as all the words and the tiny bit of frustration that was beginning to build up went away. Now, she was just speechless.

They stared into each other's eyes for what felt like forever in Eloise's opinion as Matthew simply just felt annoyed.

Eloise thought he felt the fluttering, too.

Matthew felt nothing.

"Now does it look like I want to?" He asked, rhetorically as he snapped her out of her daze. Eloise blinked a couple of times before fully snapping herself out of her daze but, that was when the teacher finally began to speak.

"Hello class. Welcome to your first year of middle school," she sighed, clapping her hands together and looking around to see what she was going to deal with for the next year that was upon them.

But, what Eloise and Matthew didn't know was that this would be the first of many years for them and their story.

And no one said it was going to be easy.
