On the Outside

I drop the pictures and they scatter all over the desk. I back away quickly and bump into someone. I turn around to see the killer, and he is wielding his knife above my head. He swings down. "Woah," I exclaim as I jump to the right nearly escaping my death.

He swings to his side and again I avoid the attack. He swings again and I catch his arm. I kick him in the lower chest before I take a punch from the killer's left fist in my face. I stumble backward into a cabinet and break a few boards.

The killer runs toward me with the knife above his head. I quickly stand up and grab a large board. I swing the board across the killer's face and he lips over and no and on his front. He doesn't move for several seconds, and I don't want to check if he is still alive. I make a break for the door and close it behind me.

I run along different networks in the halls. I check back every few seconds to make sure I'm now t being followed. I catch my breath and take a break after minutes of running. I look down the hall I am hiding in. Lights are swaying back and forth. I feel a draft flowing by me causing every goose bump on my body to ignite again. There is an door at the end, much like the one I found earlier. But the light that is pouring out of the cracks is blue.

I walk cautiously to the door. I don't hear any other footsteps other than by own. The only thing moving in the halls re the swinging lights and my shadow.

I approach the door and press my hand against the wood. Many possibilities of what could be on the other side run through my mind. The killer. Dead bodies. Hell. I push the door open and my fears disappear when I see a set of stairs leading upward.

I reach the top of the stair and open a hatch that is above me. I climb onto the floor above me and stand. I look around and see that I am in a large room with several tables. It looks like the cafeteria, but the cafeteria doesn't have a view of the football field. I quickly realize that I have found a passageway to the concession stand.

I look down at the hatch. The tile that I lifted is metal and rusty. A memory floods back to me of when I was a child. When my older brother graduated and still played football. When Terry was my best friend. For years I have wondered what the hatch was for, and what was on the other side. I now only know what is on the other side.

I walk to the door and turn the knob. I expected it to be locked, but it wasn't. Maybe the killer didn't anticipate anyone finding the passageway here. The concession stand is not connected to the school in any other way.

I open the door and walk outside. It feels as if it is the first time I have been outside in forever. The feeling of the cool night air and midnight light hits my skin. It feels so new to me, just like that hug from Derek, but this feels better.

The great feeling I am experiencing fades when I see a body hanged on the rafters outside of the concession stand.
