I watched him intently as his eyes began to cloud with wonderment and awe, before he shook his head and began speaking again.

“Few weeks had passed since that awful night, and I tried my best to stay clear of Warren and his gang, and I guess I was grateful for my uncle to have sent them to sea for a while to achieve a higher state of authority. I did not get in trouble as much either and life was bearable.

After six months of peace, the boys had come back. When I found out they were arriving I had managed to busy myself with cargo checks, missing their welcome celebration. I had put into my head that they would have forgotten all about me and thus did not focus too much on them.

That night reports of an unknown ship had come forth to our harbour and so a few of us, including me, were sent to check it.

It was a cloudy night once again so it was difficult to even notice the ship in the first place. It was quite far hidden just behind the cliffs. We had decided to go through the edge of town towards the cliffs and then climb down from there.

There were only four of us and the three were all older than me. They did not talk to me yet they never caused me any trouble and with that I was happy to work with them. We had come to the pathway again that lead to the bridge and were greeted by three shadowed figures a few paces in front.

One of the men from my side stepped forth and drew their long barrel rifle. He commanded the shadows to move but they did not move. Out of nowhere a gun shot was fired and I watched as the navy soldier fell backwards.

A gaping hole was pouring blood out of the middle of his forehead.

The right figure spoke, “how dare you speak to your captain in that manner.” I froze as I recognised the voice and my eyes grew wide in fear as the figures walked into the light, revealing themselves as Warren and his crew.

I was speechless. They had just killed one of their own. Another soldier from my right stepped forth and asked wearily what Warren was doing. The three had begun moving towards us and in each hand were the long barrel rifles. I was too young to be given one of those so I was unarmed, although the other two with me were carrying guns.

Yet that did not stop Warren, in fact a twisted smile was etched on his face as he saw the three of us cower and back away.

The other two had lifted their guns at Warren and his friends, but their hands were shaking and I knew why. They were confronted with either shooting Warren, their Captain or losing their lives.

One of Warren’s lifted a pistol from his belt and pointed it towards the Navy soldier on my right. The man began begging Warren to stop this nonsense and explain what was wrong, what had they done wrong. However that only made Warren’s smile grow wider.

Warren answered with “because you allowed someone unworthy to belong among us.”

The soldier pleaded for him to explain, but it was too late. The shot was fired and down the soldier fell. I could feel vomit threatening to spill from my mouth and my body shook to its inner core as it slowly dawned onto me.
