A cold draft interrupted my sleep during the night. With a groan I tugged the sheets back up my naked body, but still I wasn't warm enough. I rolled over reaching out for a familiar source of body heat, but I was met with nothing but air.

My eyes snapped open.

The space next to me once filled with Jasper was now nothing but rumpled sheets. I looked towards the bathroom thinking he might be using it, but the lights were turned off and the door closed. I tried not to be concerned, but waking up alone in the middle of the night was slightly alarming.

I wrapped the bedsheets underneath my arms like I would when getting out of the shower then slid out of bed. Once my feet touched the cold wooden floor, I started to make my way out of the room in search of Jasper.

Although I was sure that I might find him in the library, the room remained vacant. Next I tried the game room before turning my attention downstairs. However, I was met with empty couches and dark rooms.

I was about to panic when a figure outside the window caught my attention. They were sitting in a chair looking out at the lake wearing nothing but pants, their hair extra tousled. Immediately I relaxed--I knew that crazy brown hair anywhere.

Gently, trying not to disturb whatever he was doing, I slid the glass door open before stepping out. When it clicked shut behind me Jasper turned around, his eyes met mine.

I could faintly see his smile in moonlight. "Hey you."

The edges of my lips curled up. "Hello."

"Did I wake you?"

"No," I said stepping over melted candles. "I got cold and woke up, but you weren't there."

His smile dropped. "I'm sorry. I thought you would still be asleep when I left," he patted his lap. "Come here."

I took my spot curling up against his chest. His arms wound around me like a second blanket. This was the body heat I was looking for.

"Couldn't sleep?" I asked kissing his bare shoulder.

His chest deflated under me as he let out a long sigh. "Something like that."

The silence fell over us after the words left his mouth. Only the sound of crickets chirping and the breeze flowing between the leaves could be heard. The night was noticeably cooler, but leaning against Jasper made it bearable.

I wondered what was troubling him so much that he left the room, but before I could ask he spoke up. "I haven't been very honest with you."

I tried not to show my concern and approached the subject with caution. "What do you mean?"

He adjusted my weight on his lap before he began, "I haven't been honest about this place," he admitted. "It is Dad's place, but it was originally for someone else."

"Who?"

"My mother," his voice noticeably edged with pain.

I felt like I had to approach the conversation with even more caution. This was a dangerous territory. "Oh really? I bet she loves it."
