After grabbing some fast food we sped off towards the hospital a little insanely. It's not like it's the worst law we've broken though, so it was the least of our concerns. When we arrived the first thing I noticed was that the reporters had died down significantly. I guess the news of my brother's crash was no longer interesting anymore in just a couple of days. A few concerned reporters stopped me to ask if Ben was okay to which I said he's awake and they soon left. No cameras, no harassing, just information. It was nice not running into people who don't really care about you. What's even better is running into people that do.
"Sara?" I called out when we arrived in the waiting room.
There curled up in a chair with a familiar shadow beside her was my best friend and roommate. When she heard her name she perked up, found me across the room, and leaped from her chair.
"Allison!" she crashed into me with a massive hug. I don't know why it feels like I haven't seen her in years, but it took us awhile to let each other go. When we did she said, "I texted you but you never responded."
"Yeah, I just saw that, I'm sorry. I was . . . busy with something very important before we got here," I thought of the interview.
Sara, however, must have thought of something else because her expression changed when she saw Jasper next to me holding our food. "I see," she turned her attention to him. "Hello, Dr. Andrews. Or can I call you Jasper? I am a graduate now."
"That's fine, Ms. Kuto," he insisted as he slipped his free hand in the front of his pocket. Always the look of ease.
She rolled her eyes. "Please, you can drop the formalities. I've seen you in sweatpants before."
"Uh, right . . . Sara."
Even I could hear the awkwardness in his tone. Sara smirked, clearly pleased with tearing down is cool demeanor, before turning back to me. "I actually can't stay long. I just wanted to drop by and check on you before Kenji and I left."
"You're leaving?" I frowned.
"Yeah, Mom asked us to come visit some family back in Japan for a few weeks and I know Kenji's parents would like to see him, too," she informed winding her arm through his. "Our flight leaves in a few hours so we figured we'd drop by before heading out."
Looking at Kenji's blank expression it was probably more like Sara's idea. Still I smiled at them.
"That sounds like fun. Thank you both for coming and checking on us all."
"Of course," she smiled back. "You're family is like my family. And you're my best friend, Allison. You take priority, even above pizza."
I threw my head back in laughter at her comment. Leave it to her to frame the value of our friendship around food. Fantastic food, nonetheless.
"Thank you again. I'm glad you could stop by before leaving."
"Anytime," she winked.
I thought of something she said earlier and my smile lowered along with my voice. "Speaking of my family, did you uh . . . I mean I'm sure you have, but . . . is he . . . is Ben--?"
"Ben looks great," Sara finished off for me. "I didn't get to talk to him much, but he looks like his normal goofy self. You'll see."
