The moment the automatic doors opened, the whole floor fell silent with trepidation and anxiety. It hung in the air and the atmosphere became so heavy you could feel it physically weighing on you, like an anchor that managed to keep everyone impossibly still. You desperately searched for a distraction to ease yourself, resorting to straightening papers and such at your workstation. No matter what, you would not look at him. Everything about him was a disease: he was ruthless, unrelenting, and he left nothing but grief and destruction in his wake. He was poison. You could feel your throat tighten as footsteps grew louder, and you couldn't help yourself: You looked. The lines of guards and the single prisoner passed like a funeral procession, clad in varying shades of grey and black as they marched the criminal to his glass coffin. As they glided past the large glass window he caught your eye, his gaze locked on you as his twisted smirk grew on his face, burning in to your memory. You looked away quickly, feeling an arm drape around your shoulders comfortingly. Bruce. As quickly as they came they had left, but the uneasy tension still hung in the air. "Hey," Bruce whispered, giving you a gentle squeeze, "Are you okay?" You nodded, although you were still shaken. Watching the demigod pass was like seeing a phantom, a ghost; It was enough to make your skin crawl. Bruce gently kissed the top of your head, puling you out of your thoughts. "Take it easy, (Y/N). We're almost done for the day." You tried to return to your work, but your mind was scattered all over the place. You could feel Bruce's eyes on you from across the lab, and although you were grateful for his concern you wished he would leave you be. You didn't understand why seeing him was effecting you in this way; Loki was the last thing you wanted on your mind at the moment. The chatter of the workstation dropped to a hush as Fury strode in to the room, the squeaking of his leather boots calling the room to attention like soldiers. He cleared his throat, his single eye focused on you. "The bastard requests your presence, Agent (Y/L/N)." Fury said simply, and your heart sank. You knew this would happen; Hell, there was no escaping it. You felt rather queasy, when Bruce placed a hand on your shoulder, his kind eyes searching your face. "Y/N, are you alright?" You hesitated before nodding, although you knew you were lying. "If you want, I can go with you-" "-I'll be fine, Bruce," You said quickly, a sudden surge of confidence flooding your body, "I can handle this." You could tell that he didn't believe you. You didn't even believe yourself. However, Bruce wore a solemn expression as he nodded and gently kissed your forehead in farewell. "I'll see you later, okay?"

As you made your way down the corridor you felt like the walls were slowly starting to close in on you and your heart pounded into your ears so loud you felt as if your head was going to burst. You struggled to keep your head up high as your mind went to the worst possibilities, not knowing what to expect from this meeting. This wasn't a walk of shame, however...this was a walk into living hell. The doors slid open and there he was, standing inside of his glass prison like an animal trapped inside of a cage, standing perfectly still. He was waiting to strike. Taking a deep breath, you walked to his chamber and folded your arms across your chest, glaring at the demigod before you. "What do you want?" He raised an eyebrow at your sour tone, though his expression didn't change. In fact, your hostility seemed to amuse him. "After all this time, and not even a simple hello?" He mused, tutting like he was scolding a child, "Where are your manners, (Y/N)?" You glowered at him, speaking through gritted teeth. "Go to hell." You spat, his lips twisting into the all too familiar smirk that still haunted your thoughts. He chuckled, the sound like crunching gravel. "Let's not be hostile, now; It isn't very ladylike." You rolled your eyes, clenching your jaw. Was any of this really necessary? "Have you missed me, (Y/N)?" He mused, chuckling upon seeing your less than enthusiastic expression. You scowled, scoffing. "Obviously not, as I see you've fallen in love with the giant green oaf," He mused, a ghost of a smirk on his thin lips, "Look how far you've fallen, giving yourself to a hostile, cantankerous beast-" "-What do you really want, Loki?" You snapped through gritted teeth, his smirk only growing at your attempt to change the subject. He was getting the exact thing he wanted: a reaction. "I've come to apologize." You felt anger boiling up inside of you like nothing you've ever felt; Every part of your body felt numb. "You think you can just apologize for killing so many innocent people? For destroying half of the city? For stripping people of their humanity by forcing them to bow to you like the demonic tyrant you are?" You spat, your body beginning to quake with anger and hatred. How DARE he think that he was above punishment for his crimes! "There is nothing you can do that will earn you forgiveness, Loki. I will make sure of that." He simply smiled, chuckling. "On the contrary I have come to apologize to you, (Y/N)," He said quietly, "For everything I have done to you." You blinked in surprise, not certain if you had heard him correctly. "I feel as though I owe you an apology...for everything I have put you through." He repeated, the usual mirth leaving his eyes as they fell to the ground. "I truly wish to say that I'm sorry." Your heart was in your throat, feeling as if someone had their hands around your neck. He was offering you another chance at what you had wanted the very most: Him. You were lost in a flood of emotions, remembering everything you had been put through because of him; You mourned for weeks over his death, your heart practically torn from your chest when Thor had delivered the news of his passing. When S.H.I.E.L.D has offered you a job you had decided to accept it so you could leave Asgard, a place that only seemed empty. You had felt Loki's presence everywhere until you had been suffocating in grief, and S.H.I.E.L.D had been an escape from the desolation you had felt. You had tried to move on with Bruce, though it wasn't the same...Loki had been the only person you had ever truly loved, and he was dead...or so you had believed. Later finding out that he was not only alive and well, but also blowing up city blocks and destroying entire towns, had ripped through your broken heart like a bullet; Everything you had felt towards him, compassion, admiration, love, had been shattered. You had ached for his embrace for so long and now he was standing before you, unreachable. "How could you do this to me?" Your voice trembled as you sniffled, biting your lower lip. "I thought..." "It was wrong, my love, I-" "-Don't," You put your hand up as your voice broke, "Don't call me that." He looked up in surprise, hurt radiating from his gaze. "(Y/N)..." "You aren't the same person I knew on Asgard," You admitted, "You haven't been for a long time." You stepped closer to the glass, shaking your head. "Why?" "What?" "Why did you kill all of those innocent people?" You asked, softly, watching his eyes flicker across your face as the cogs in his head began whirling. "Why did you do it?" "I...I..." "Why did you break Fregga's heart?" With every question your voice grew louder until you were practically yelling, "Why did you throw yourself off of the bridge when Odin and Thor came to make amends?" This seemed to spark a reaction. "He treated me like a monster," He snarled, slamming his palms against the glass, "I became the monster he feared! I-It's what I am!" "NO," Your throat was burning as tears began to escape, "You did this to yourself!" Loki was growing upset, lip trembling as you pushed on. "I did what I had to!" He growled, "I was the rightful heir of Asgard!" "Why did you let me believe you were dead?!" You demanded, tears flooding down your cheeks. "Why , when you knew how much pain it would cause me! Why, when you knew how much I loved you?" "It was the only way, (Y/N)! Can't you see that?" Without another word you turned away and began to make your way to the exit, feeling your heart tear within your chest. "(Y/N)? C-Come back here!" He sniffled, "(Y/N)!" You didn't stop, even when he began hitting his glass enclosure. "(Y/N!)" His voice cried out, "(Y/N), listen to me!" He screamed, pounding his fists against the glass as tears streamed from his eyes as he watched you walk away. "Please!" You hiccuped as you fought back your own tears. His voice, now raw from screaming, became hauntingly quiet. "Please, (Y/N). Stop..." ...And you obeyed. "Let me hold you one more time," He choked out, making you realize just how close you were to the release button, "(Y/N)..." "I don't trust you, Loki." You said, not even halfway believing yourself. You trusted him too much. "I want you, (Y/N)," He mused, the demigod's smooth voice filled your every sense, "I want to hold you close to me, to breathe you in, to feel you against me. Please...grant a poor sinner his last wish." Your hand hovered above the button that would let him out, heart pounding in your ears as the tips of your fingers brushed against the smooth surface. You didn't even remember reaching for the button, but his words filled you with a strange warmth that tangled your thoughts. Memories of long, sleepless nights resurfaced as he continued his musings and without another moment's hesitation you slammed your fist on his cell release button, a feeling of blissful numbness flooding your senses. The smirk on his face grew impossibly wide as he stepped out of his confinement, but you couldn't seem to move. It was almost as if you were watching everything happen outside of your body, as if you were stuck in a dream state. He approached you, taking hold of your arm and turning you to face him. His crystalline eyes held nothing but kindness as he brought a hand to your face, chuckling as you leaned in to his touch. "I've missed you, (Y/N)." He gathered you in his arms much like he had done before and you immediately accepted his embrace, feeling like you had returned home after so long. You could feel his fingers playing with your hair, his tight grip around your waist....you had craved it. Your tears blurred your vision as his soothing voice broke through the silence. "I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me for all of this pain I have caused." You sniffled, his grip growing tighter as he gently kissed the top of your head to calm you down. You never even noticed he had gotten his scepter back..."Don't worry, my love. All of this will be over soon. I promise." Without another word or a moment's hesitation, a horrible pain seared through your back as your lungs tightened in your chest, feeling as if they were on fire, paralyzed as all the breath left your body.Loki ripped out the gilded scepter that had been plunged deep inside of you, a haunting smirk on his twisted features. "Once again," The world around you began to crumble into darkness as your ears echoed with the sound of his chilling, sadistic laughter. "My sincerest apologies."
