Chapter 21: Somebody Got Friend-zoned

“I texted Isabelle, I told her to meet up in the inn as soon as she’s done with her business.” Nel said and walked over to the car then unlocked its doors.

Luna still looked puzzled as another roar was unleashed by a beast a few miles away. “Aren’t you curious what that is?” the look on her face grew frantic as little battle cries erupted from the other direction.

“Not our business to attend to,” Martha tugged Luna’s arm as she stared at the misty forest wondering where the beast could be located, “we have places to go.”

Luna tugged along as they made their way out of the mountain where the smoke grew high just like the authorities’ awareness. Ambulances and fire trucks were quick in the action, as much as possible Bobby avoided them to remove attention.

Isabelle was impatiently waiting at the front of the inn who looked tired and exhausted. Her whole outfit was slightly dusty that was the same with her hair. The boots that looked shiny black at the beginning turned brown from mud.

The ride back to New York was a total black out as Luna remembered it, she was asleep for the whole journey and the sun was just dawned as they returned back to the city. Bright blinding lights were there to welcome her together with the loud honking and the busy streets of Time Square. The Company’s insurance front liner building was dull as usual. Their bags were taken by two men dressed in black uniforms, not a suit though but black long sleeved office attires.

People greeted them inside the lobby for the successful turnout of their mission; they were kept interrupted until they found peace once they’ve entered the elevator.

The core looked very busy and the familiar face of Charlie made Luna’s heart feel warm as a slight unexpected blush appeared in her cheeks. People started to crowd on them inquiring about the latest mission, Bobby did all the talking while Isabelle and Luna took off from the crowd. Charlie was the first ones to greet them with a hug as he waited by the giant venus flytrap who looked healthy despite that Isabelle wasn’t there to take care of it.

“So how was it?” Charlie said but Isabelle gave grunting looks, “what?”

“I’m tired so I’ll just go to my room and leave the chatting to Luna okay,” Isabelle tapped Charlie’s shoulder and left semi dragging her feet on the floor that left visible mud tracks on the hallway.

“Uhmm,” Charlie mumbled,

“Don’t ask, she won’t talk about it at all.” Luna said with a slight smirk.

“So Luna are you hungry? We could have dinner,” Charlie shyly asked as small beads of sweat were visible on his forehead and neck.

Luna tried hard not to giggle or blush which was hard to do and yet managed to do it, “Charlie, are you asking me out?” she asked and Charlie almost lost it in embarrassment as his cheeks turned bright red.

“No, no, no, more like a”-Charlie stopped as he had a hard time making eye contact with Luna who had one eye brow up-“a friend thing,” he was surprised at what he said and yet more likely relieved that he saved himself for future rejection that was plausible.

“A friend thing?” Luna repeated to confirm if what she heard was correct.

“Yes a friend thing, you know like a homecoming dinner or something,” Charlie just stopped talking as he was losing some points for his awkwardness.

“Yeah sure, just give me twenty minutes to change, or probably more than that.”

Charlie checked his time and it was still early for them to miss their routinely dinner time. “Yeah, okay I’ll be waiting here,” he said as Luna walked away.
