Ron is such a good friend! He's funny, and really likes quidditch. "I'm going to be in quidditch when I get to hogwarts," he had told me. Uncle Padfoot is super excited for me. He told me that on my eleventh birthday (in one week!) we're going to invite a bunch of people and have cake and ice cream and...
A lot of things.
But I don't know if I want a huge party like that. I don't want to hurt uncle Padfoot's feelings, though, so I agree and act excited. I think uncle Moony knows, though. He told me when he said goodnight last night that sometimes parties can be fun and sometimes they're overwhelming. I'm really grateful he understands.
This morning is gray and rainy, a day of solitude and serenity. The familiar smell of bacon wafts up from floor to floor. I push my glasses onto my nose and dress, splashing some cold water on my face as I passed the bathroom.
"Morning, Moony," I say and take a plate.
"Hello, Harry," he says. His tone is exactly the same, but I catch a little tremor of excitement I've never heard from him this early in the morning. And Sirius is up, too!"How in the world," I began. "Did you get up so early?" Sirius grinned and yawned.
"A bucket of cold water and lots and lots of coffee," he yawned, and gulped down the rest from his blue coffee cup.
"What on earth is going on today? This is a very odd start to today!" I feel like they are both hiding something.
"Pooh. Odd? Nothing about it! Moony just wanted me to see the-the early morning sunrise," Padfoot said airily, waving his hand nonchalantly. I snorted.
"But it's cloudy."
"But it's beautiful all the same, isn't it? Now, Padfoot and I need to run a few errands, and we're going to let you stay here. Ron will be arriving shortly, so you won't have to stay alone." Remus grabbed his coat and placed the dirty dishes in the sink.
"What?! Just what is going on?" I say, completely flabbergasted.
"Just wait and see," Sirius winks, and disappears in a poof and a crack with Remus.
"I am so confused," I say, when Ron walks in the door.
"Why?" He asks, grabbing a cauldron cake from the fridge. "Ig got goffused a' aww." I roll my eyes.
"They both left me home alone, a rare occasion. Sirius was up earlier than me, a doubly rare occasion, and we had cauldron cakes with breakfast! Moony always makes us eat healthy foods!" Ron shrugs.
" I dunno. Didn't you say they had an errand they had to run?"
"No, I didn't, which means you're in on this too!"
"Oops, heh heh.." Ron grins sheepishly. "You'll just have to wait and find out, mate."
A few hours passed by. Ron and I had amused ourselves by playing wizarding chess, fantasy quidditch, and looking through some old photo albums.
"When will they come?" Ron sighed, sending a seeker weaving through the field.
"I don't know. They said 'we'll be gone for a while'. I guess I didn't catch their definition of 'while'." Ron snorted. Then he sobered up.
"Hey, mate? What was it like with the Dursleys' ?"
"I don't want to talk about it." I had successfully blocked some memories, but nightmares kept coming back and back again, and the same purple evil face appeared again and again. I had trained myself to not wake up screaming, but instead wake up gasping for air, eyes wet with unshed tears. Moony and Padfoot thought I had long outgrown them, but only because I had told them so. "Ron. This should be explanation enough." And I showed him the scars on my arms.
