"Blimey, first week is already over, mate," Ron said, shivering in his jacket as we walked back from Hagrid's.

"I know, isn't it crazy?" I asked, but I wasn't really paying attention. A white shape was flying towards us in the cloudy sky. "Ron, look! Is that Hedwig?" We stared up at the sky, our eyes watering. It was Hedwig. She landed on my outstretched arm and hooted, holding out a leg with a parchment tied to it. "What've you got here, Hedwig? A letter from Remus and Sirius?" I untied it and gave her an owl treat from my jacket pocket. She hooted in thanks and flew away.

"Open it, mate!" Ron said, gesturing at the letter I was holding. I unrolled it. It was from Moony, and was very hurriedly written.

Dear Harry,

I have sent you a letter so you will not worry. As you know, last night was full moon. As usual, Sirius and I apparated to a field and did what had to get done. But Sirius got hurt very badly and is at Rose Cottage. I have left for your own safety.

Harry, I almost killed him. I almost killed my best friend. I need you to understand this. I need to leave so I will not hurt you or anyone else. I have written to Dumbledore to ask if you might come home for a week or two. He will notify you. Harry, never forget that I love you very much. Maybe someday our paths will cross again.

Love,

Moony

By the time I finished, angry tears were rolling down my cheeks and blotting the ink. I turned to Ron, who had been reading over my shoulder.

"Why does he think we don't want him any more? Stupid, stupid Remus! Why did he leave- it only worsened the situation!!" I yelled.

"Who left?" A familiar voice sounded. Hermione. From the train. Her bushy hair was pulled back in a thick plait behind her. She was wearing a Gryffindor scarf and a grey jacket.

"No one," Ron snapped. She completely ignored him.

"Who left?" She repeated.

"My uncle, if it's any of your business," I said, angrily wiping my tears away.

"Why? I heard the bit about hurting someone." Hermione looked sympathetic. "Did he hurt someone important? It must have been important to him if he left."

"He hurt my other uncle. It's rude to eavesdrop," I added. I looked at Ron. He was glaring at Hermione. I sighed.

"Oh. How? It sounds like he didn't do it on purpose," Hermione mused thoughtfully.

"He didn't. Why are you asking?" I snapped.

"Leave him alone, you snake. His uncles are important to him!" Ron snapped. But Hermione just smirked.

"Of course I won't leave you alone, Weasley. I'm going to help you find him. "
