BEEP BEEP BEEP. I slowly crack open my eyes to see myself surrounded by white. Gentle rays of sun filter their way in through the blinds. I try to sit up only to be met with a searing burst of pain in my ribs. I let out a mumbled fuck. Alone and unable to move I simply stare at the ceiling waiting, for what, I'm not sure. After what feels like a lifetime I hear the door creak open.
"Hello?" I manage to breathe out.
"Luke? Oh my god Luke," a woman cries out. I still haven't seen her face due to all the pillows and blankets obscuring my view, but her voice... it's so familiar. I hear the soft pad of slippered feet. I look side to side eager to find the source of the voice. Finally a small blond appears by my side.
Without thinking a whispered "Mom?" escapes my dry lips.
"Hi sweet heart. Are you feeling alright?" my mom's ears perk up slightly like they used to when I was little. She called them her listening ears. She claimed they would come closer to me, eager to listen.
I smile faintly thinking back. "Luke honey? Did you hear me?"
I shake away the distant memory. "Sorry. What?"
"I'll be right back. I just have to grab a doctor. Okay?" she says in her kindergarten voice.
"Mom, I'm not 5," I say with a soft giggle.
"I know hun, but you'll always be my little baby," she says before heading to the door.
I lie still with a stupid little grin on my face. My body's still aching but my mom definitely helped lift my spirits. I feel myself drifting off, lost in thought. "HEY!" my eyes snap open.
The distant sound of sneakers slapping against the cold ceramic tiles comes ever closer to my room. I struggle to slowly sit myself up letting out a pained grunt. Just as I finally manage to prop myself up I see a flash of red. Before I can even open my mouth 3 hyper boys all attempt to jump onto my bed. "Shit Cal," I hiss at my honorary chinese.
"Oh, sorry Luke," he gets up with the saddest pout I'd ever seen, rubbing the back of his neck. I'm 99.23% sure Calum is a puppy.
"Nah it's fine mate," I reply with an easy grin.
"We're so glad you're okay," Ashton cuts in with a goofy, lopsided smile.
"Thanks goldie locks," I tease referring to his luscious hair, "but would someone mind telling me exactly what happened?" The boys all exchange an all too revealing look. "You're hiding something!" I accuse, "Come on guys! Just tell me. What?"
"Luke, you should calm down. You just woke up. Relax," my red haired friend advises nervously.
"How can I? I wake up one day and my body feels like shit, my mom is in tears, and my best friends are acting like I'm a ghost. I think I deserve an explanation," I complain.
"Well there was an accident... and you are a ghost," Calum answers solemnly.
"What?!" This can't be happening. I can't be dead, I have so much I want to do! Who's gonna take care of Hemmo1996?
The 3 boys burst out laughing. "Calum that was not cool," Ashton chastises wiping away his tears.
"Not nice, but fucking hilarious," Michael chimes in with a snicker.
I scowl flicking Calum off. Of course with my luck, that's when my mom decides to walk in. All 4 of us share a look. This can't possibly end well. "I'm just going to walk back out pretend that I didn't see that." my mom says calmly.
I nod dumbly. That car must have crushed me.
My mom walks back in with a pleasant smile while I continue to stare, dumfounded. My fellow bandmates seem to be in the same state of shock as myself. A tall man with sharply defined features enters the room. "Hello Luke, I am Dr. Babino and I just need to check in with you really quick," the man says in a voice far too deep for his body.
I nod slightly unsure. "Sorry, but I am going to have to ask everyone to leave the room," Babino states.
"What? Why? He just woke up!" my friends protest.
"Well this exam is going to be, umm, rather personal." the doctor answers stiffly.
Everyone nods finally understanding and get up to leave. "Wait!" I call out. My mom sticks her head back in the little doorway. "Can I have a female doctor for this?" I whine.
"Come on Luke, you'll be fine," my mom answers with a small smile. I let out a groan as she finally leaves me to my doom.
"Luke, I'm going to start the physical now," Dr. Babino says softly.
This is going to be a long day.
