Chapter 20: Kate

So that happened.....

Okay...when I get outside, there will probably be some people waiting and they'll probably ask how I'm doing. No problem. 

I stumble out of the infirmary, my head throbbing.

"Nice to see that you're awake. How you feeling?"

Knew it. 

Joseph and Jen were sitting in a few chairs outside of the room I was in. 

"........."

I knew this would be awkward.

"Good."

We stood there and I was thinking.........I thought......I was still thinking when I shouted out

"OMG JEN WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE!?!?!? AREN'T YOU DEAD? I MEAN NO OFFENSE BUT LIKE YOU'RE DEAD. 

WAIT. 

AM I DEAD? OMG I'M DEAD AND EVERYONE'S DEAD. WE'RE ALL DE..."

"Kate. Calm down."

I look over and see Joseph. Calm as ever. 

*sigh*

We walk out as Jen and Joseph inform me on how things have been going for the factions. They're all still at war and everything but things are "settling" down. 

I stopped. 

"Where's Anna?"

We all stopped. Jen and Joseph looked at each other and then back at me. 

"She didn't make it."

I knew it. Eventually I was going to have to hear those words come out of someone's mouth. I was sad, but not sad enough to cry. The tears just weren't there. It seems the taste of betrayal was still on my tongue. 

" I see."

"You okay?"

"Yeah, I'm fine."

We continued walking  in silence.

Jen and I weren't strong enough to fight yet so we said goodbye to Joseph and headed over to the infirmary. We sat down in the waiting room, trying to strike up conversation.....but we both knew there was a giant elephant in the room that needed to be addressed. 

"So....."

"So......"

"Do you ha-"

"Jen."

She stopped and listened.

"I need my money."

"Wha-"

"You owe me that cafeteria money."

"Kate, we can talk about this later. You know when this whole war thing comes to an end?"

"Fine. BUT! If you don't give me my money, I won't return your book."

"KATE! THAT'S MY BOOK AND I NEED IT BACK!"

"You'll get it back when this whole war thing is over."

"Fine."

And that was that.
