The only memories left of our relationship was the pictures; the pictures that held every secret. They were the only thing that lasted after all our fights and tears. They brought out the good of all the bad. Yet they stayed in the attic untouched from everyone until my little sister found it years later.  I was twenty years old and a freshman at the local college. I had been late student because my whole family moved from London to a small town in the middle of Iowa when I was eighteen. I had to stay home for the next two years because my parents couldn’t afford a babysitter for my seven year old sister. I finally got to go to college every day and push back those memories of us. Still, it came all right back to me when I came home and found the scrapbook with all our pictures sitting on the kitchen table. Luckily for me, it was closed. I quickly took the scrapbook and shoved it on the top shelf in my closet. I was relief that I wouldn’t have to see that book for a while now. I went to bed that night with no worries of the book.  The morning, I woke up to find the book wide open on the floor. As I stared at the picture, all the memories of our relationship came back.

The first picture we took together was the one that stood out. I remembered our families had gone camping together because they wanted us to become friends. Little did they know that we would become more than friends. Our parents had signed us up for many activities at the camp site but we had always ended up ditching them for better stuff. We had spent two weeks swimming in the lakes, running around, hitting the football and doing a lot of other fun activities. But my favourite one of all was when we sat by the campfire all together and Jack played his guitar while I hummed along. This picture described it very well because I had my nuzzled up in his shoulder while he strummed some string. Jack had become my best friend in one blink of a flash.

The next picture in the book was one of the both of us watching fireworks on July 4th. Jack knew that I was American so he had decided to bring me to a festival that celebrate Patriots day. I had brought my camera along to take beautiful shots of the fireworks for my media project but the one that I had chosen in the end was of both of us. In the picture, Jack had his arm around me while we both held the camera. Our grins were huge but they showed how happy we were.

A couple pages later, there was a different picture from the others. The picture on this page was the first one we had taken after we became more than friends. Anyone who looked at this picture could realize the love between the two of us. This picture had been taken at a restaurant not too far from my parent’s pad in London. I remember how we were sitting on the rooftop of the restaurant enjoying a beautiful picnic when Jack popped the question. He seemed so nervous but we both knew that we had feelings for each other. The picture was taken right after I had said yes; Jack had hired a worker to take a picture at the exact moment that he would kiss me. As I looked at the picture, my lips tingled with a different sensation- a sensation of wanting Jack’s lips against mine.

Picture of dates and dates later, I finally arrived at our first formal dance. The picture in my scrapbook was taken by Finn. Finn was a genius in photography so he had taken the picture so perfectly. I had my head and hands resting on Jack’s shoulder while he had both his arm wrapped around my body. In the picture, I was wearing my beautiful coral gown that he had bought me for the special event. He was wearing a tuxedo with a tie that matched my dress. I remembered that this picture was taken while our song was playing- I will always love you. This picture had made the yearbook, the same year.

Another picture that brought tears to my eyes was the one of us by the beach. Jack had always been the man to bring me on surprise dates. He never told me what to wear or what to bring so I was always left in worry that I was dressed wrong for the event. The only time he had told me what to wear was when we went to the beach. He had called me at 10 am announcing that it was such a beautiful day and we should enjoy it by heading to the beach. I had packed my sunscreen, bikini, hat and other beach type accessories for the marvelous day that was bound to happen. Jack had picked me up in his beautiful convertible that his parents had bought him for his 18th birthday. We drove by the ocean for a couple hours until we reached our destination. We spent the day relaxing on our beach towels, swimming in the water, splashing each other and exchanging a few kisses here and there. I was glad that the beach wasn’t too busy on that day. That night, we didn’t go back home. We headed to a hotel on that beach and spent the night there. It was the first night that I had spent alone with Jack since we became friends. It was the first night that I felt safe and comfortable. This picture held so many great memories but it was also the last picture of us together. The next morning after I had gotten home, my parents told me that we were going back to America in a week because my grandparents were getting old and my dad had gotten his old job back. I barely had time for Jack in those few days because we had been too busy packing. I was so busy packing that I had forgotten to tell him till the very day. That’s when all the tears and fight had happened. He had told me that we could go to the same university and share a flat together. However, I wasn’t ready to commit myself to such a relationship. I was scared of being alone without my family. Even though I loved Jack and I felt safe with him, I knew that I had to move on with my family. I never got over him and I regret the decision ever since. That’s why I had left the book in the attic because I wanted to forget the past.

“Mom, do you know why this book keeps appearing everywhere I go?” I screamed from my room

“What book sweetie?” She walked in my room

“The one of Ja-” I couldn’t say his name

“I wanted you to see it because all of the Harries family are coming to visit us next week.” She answered

All the memories, all the laughter, all the love will be back in a week, the same amount of time that I had to get rid of it.
