chapter sixteen: *if song doesn't work on mobile : Mind Over Matter - PVRIS*
I was busy rummaging through my closet when I heard a knock at my door. I groaned, immediately expecting to be scolded by my parents.
"Come in." I half muttered as I kept my back to the door, I heard it open but when there was no yelling or tisking I turned around. "Evan?"
Something was off about him, he wasn't angry, he wasn't happy either though. I slowly abandoned looking for my sweater and stood up to face him. I took a seat at the end of my bed and just stared forward.
"You alright?" I got no answer.
I took a seat beside him and waited a bit before bumping my shoulder with his.
"Evan, what's up."
"What are you looking for?" I scrunched my eyebrows together in confusion,
"What do you-"
He turned to look at me sharply "What are you looking for in your closet?"
" A sweater?" I said slowly, growing more and more confused as the seconds ticked by.
"You sure?"
I nodded, giving him an odd look. "Want to tell me why you're in here now?"
"I found something?"
I swallowed, immediately suspecting the worse. Whatever that could be.
"okay." I said looking down at my hands, I fiddled with the chain on my bracelet. I felt his gaze burning holes into the side of my head.
"what did you find?" I mused, my voice barely above a whisper.
I heard him sigh before he pushed himself off of the bed and stood in front of me. Ever so slowly he kneeled down so that he was eye level with me. He looked pained and it hurt my heart to see him like this.
"What is going on?" I asked, again. He shook his head.
"You promise me you weren't looking for anything else in that closet?"
"Evan what the hell are you-"
Then it clicked. Everything made sense. I sucked in a breath and refused to look at him. A wave of guilt flooded over my body and I couldn't help the tears that sprung to my eyes.
"Eve please tell me you weren't looking for that box."
I shook my head, unable to make the words come out of my mouth.
"Look I don't expect you to spill your guts to me. You've never done that and I don't expect you to start now. I just need to know that you're not falling back into that horrible path again, or if you haven't gotten out of it. I just need to know that you're okay."
I sucked my lips into my mouth and squeezed my eyes closed. I prayed that this was all a horrible nightmare. That Evan hadn't snooped through my room, he hadn't found the box. None of this was real, it couldn't be.
"Evelyn please." He whispered grabbing my hand and giving me a small jerk.
I opened my eyes and the tears started to run down my face.
"Why." I sobbed, he was taken back,
"Why Evan." I repeated over and over.
"Why did you go through my room!"
He clenched his jaw and I knew everything was about to blow.
"I care about you that's why! You're my little sister that's why! I was fucking going insane worrying about you."
