I couldn't sleep at all tonight.

All I could think about was Phil. I want to keep him safe. I have to keep him safe. He deserves the best.

And I won't let the bullshit he gets from his dad make him think any different.

He said he wanted to fucking kill himself. Just the thought of that alone makes me hold him even tighter. I looked down at Phil, who was sleeping peacefully with his head resting on my chest. I smile and place a soft kiss on the top of his head.

I continued to stay awake with my thoughts until the morning sun poured in through the windows. I unwrap one arm from around Phil and reach for my phone. It was already ten.

"Phil?" I murmur quietly, while shaking him slightly.

"Yeah?" I heard him say with a small yawn. His voice was so low in the morning. If situations were different, I would be turned on. It sounds extremely sexy.

"Good morning!" I chirp. Phil angles his head so that it's still rested on my chest, but so that he can look up at me. He says nothing but gives a small smile.

"So, are you up for breakfast soon? I make a mean stack of pancakes, if I say so myself." I offer with a small laugh. He shoots me a playful frown.

"Can't we just lay here for a little longer?" He asks with a pout. I feel my face grow red and I smile at him.

"Fine, I guess so." I say happily.

A few hours later, Phil and I were up and out of the house. We walked hand in hand, deciding where to eat breakfast.

"Dan it's freezing, couldn't we just take your car?" Phil exclaimed, clutching my hand harder to keep from it shaking. I look at him and try to suppress a laugh at his red nose.

"Nope, walking is good. Plus, gas is getting pretty pricey and I haven't gotten my weekly check from my mum. She gives me those to help me live without her and my dad until I get a job, which hasn't happened yet." I explain.

"When was the last time you heard from your parents?" Phil asks me seriously. I shrug.

"In all honestly, I don't exactly remember." I say blankly. Phil lets out a dramatic huff of air.

"What's that about, Rudolph?" I ask playfully, commenting on his sigh.

"Parents are dumb." He tells me simply. I nod.

"And why did you call me Rudolph?" Be laughs. I stop walking and grab his other hand so were face to face.

"Because your nose is very red." I say, smiling before pecking a light kiss his frozen nose.

We settle to eat at a cute, little diner in the middle of town. It's small and quaint, and Phil loves it. We get our seats and sit at the back booth right by a window that looked out onto the street.

"So... about last night." Phil started, "I really appreciate you letting me stay. But you do know I have to go back" I reach across the table and gently hold his hand.

"Call the police on him." I say in a stern voice.

"Dan, I can't." He replies quietly.

"And why is that?" I ask. He looks down at our hands and smiles before frowning again.

"Because they'd make me leave. I would go far away. I don't like that."

"Why? You would finally be away from him" I say. Phil nods slowly.

"But I would also be away from you." He says quietly, not making eye contact. I open my mouth to speak, but no words come out.

"Plus, I only have to deal with it for a few more years, then I can leave and never look back." He says, smiling at the thought of the one thing he's wanted since his father started beating him; to leave and never look back. But what if he doesn't live until then? I can't be the reason he doesn't help himself.

"Phil, I-"

The sound of heels tapping towards our table interrupts me. I take a deep breath and try not to choke on the scent of perfume.

"Hi, baby!" Amber squeals while squeezing into  the booth. I say nothing and stare blankly straight ahead. She links arms with me.

"Who's your friend, Danny?" She asks, her voice so high my ear drums could burst any second.

"This," I start, grabbing Phil's hand once again. "Is my boyfriend."

I keep my gaze on him, smiling like a dork.

"Aw, cute. So, Dan. Why haven't you called?" She pouts. I unlink my arm from hers and stare her dead in the eyes.

"Because, I do not like you Amber." I say simply. She smiles and rolls her eyes, finally standing up out of our booth.

"Of course you do, silly! Well, I have to go. But I'll see you later, right Dan?" She asks, biting her lip with a wink. My facial changes to unimpressed.

"No." I say as she turns and walks away.

"I'm so sorry about that, Phil." I say apologetically. He laughs.
"She's so stupid." He giggles. I join him, laughing at Amber's arrogance.
