The damp shingles press into my back and cold rain pierces my whole body. The world is dark. It is almost peaceful. Almost. The world will never seem to be anything but chaos because I know what is in the world. There are parents who don't care. There are girls who sell their bodies to get attention. There is a beautiful boy getting attacked by the one person who should protect him. No matter how quiet and calm the world looks from the outside, it will always have its secrets.

I jump in through my window from the roof and change from my rain soaked clothes to dry ones. It is now 4:00 a.m., and I am anything but tired. I want to scream. I feel so helpless. I love him, and I can't help him. My body tenses as I pace back a forth in my dark room. He doesn't deserve this. I can feel my body grow red and heated from anger the longer I think about phils situation. In a quick movement I throw out my arm and swipe my lamp off of my desk and across the room. The shade crumples against the wall and the bulb shatters immediately with contact to the ground. I fall to the ground and hot tears escape my eyes. This isn't fair. I fall asleep sprawled across the ground.

I wake up with the weird taste of an uncomfortable sleep on my tongue. I stand up off the rough carpet and stretch my arms widely with a big yawn. It's only 7:30, so I have time to grab a quick breakfast before heading to school. I change out of the clothes I fell asleep, in to black jeans and a white shirt with a black spray painted smiley face, and a black jacket. My mind still burns from last night, but I have to ignore it. I run downstairs, grab a banana, my bag, and my keys. After gobbling up the fruit, I head out the door.

I don't see Phil during first or second period, because we have different classes. As I walk into the cafeteria I spot PJ and Chris sitting at our usual table, but no Phil. My worries start to kick in. I fasten my pace and make my way to the table.

"Guys where's Phil?" I ask, setting my lunch tray down.

"Lookin for your lover boy are ya?" Chris giggles. I roll my eyes at him.

"Yes, yes I am. Now have you seen him?" I ask quickly with a slight tone of anger. A light hand touches my back.

"Dan, I'm right here, it's fine," I hear Phil say behind me. I turn to face him. His blue eyes are shadowed by deep black bags and his hair is slightly messy. I sigh quietly and hug him.

"I'm sorry. I was worried," I say muffled into his shoulder. He rubs my back soothingly and sways our body's slightly. We release from our embrace and sit at the table.

"So what have you two been up to?" I ask PJ and Chris casually, pretending everything that just happened didn't occur.

"Well," PJ starts, swallowing some pizza. "Chris and I just played video games at my place all weekend. What about you guys?" He says, taking another gigantic bite of his food.

"We hung out all weekend," Phil said happily. I'm glad to hear him sounding like himself.

PJ and Chris look at each other then back at us, both wiggling their eyebrows like mad men.

"Ooooo," PJ said in a high pitched voice.

"Use protection boys!" Chris laughed loudly.

Phil and I began laughing at their friendly foolishness. I threw a small fry at Chris but he caught it and ate it with victory. Out of the corner of my eye, I see Amber sitting over at an empty table by herself and looking over at my group. She notices me staring and winks. I quickly look away, shuddering.

I can't stand her. Soon, the lunch bell rings, dismissing us to our next class. I say goodbye to Phil, Chris and PJ. They all leave, and I go to pick up my bag and go. The room is pretty much empty. A small hand grabs my shoulder.

"Hey, Dan." I hear a voice say from behind me. I turn and see Amber. But it's different. She doesn't look or sound like she's trying to hit on me. She seems sad almost.

"What Amber?" I ask, just a hint of annoyance showing in my voice.

"I'm sorry," she says quickly. She doesn't make eye contact with me. I'm slightly shocked.

"For what?" I ask.

"For hitting on you all the time even though you have a boyfriend and making you uncomfortable," she explains. I really don't care what she has to say to me, but I appreciate it.

"Well, it's fine Amber, but I got to go to class. Bye."

With that, I turn my back to her and exit the cafeteria. Who knew the girl who sold her body for attention could feel remorse. Maybe the world has more secrets than I originally thought.
