"Holly," my best friend, Shay, shrieks in excitement. "We just have to go to Landon's gig tonight!"
"I don't know, Shay," I say, unconvinced. "Landon kind of hates me."
"He does not!" she said, rolling her eyes. "Honestly, I think he has a crush on you."
Now it was my turn to roll my eyes. "Yeah, right. He totally has a crush on me, I could tell by the way he threatened that if I came to their gig, I'm as good as dead."
"He didn't mean that," Shay sighs. "He means that if you were there, watching him and his band perform, he'd get too nervous. He just doesn't want to mess up in front of you."
"Whatever, I'm not risking my life," I mumbled, crossing my arms stubbornly. "Just because he's your friend, doesn't mean he's mine. Besides, We're The Kids is a stupid band name."
"Well, I'm not going to the gig alone," Shay says. "So you're coming with me without a choice."
-
There was surprisingly a big crowd tonight, and the bar was crowded with a bunch of people. Maybe they came for the drinks instead of the band, I wouldn't be surprised at that.
"What the hell are you doing here? I thought I told you to stay away!" Landon screams in my face as soon as he sees me.
"And I thought I told you to go to hell, but it looks like you're still here... unfortunately," I replied in a sweet tone.
"Just leave her alone, Lan," Shay warns him. "She's with me."
"Whatever," he spat. "But I swear if she messes me up..."
"Oh, just take the stick out of your ass and chill," I huffed. "You won't even see me."
I walked away without another word and I could feel his eyes burn into the back of my head. Shay quickly caught up with me and says sheepishly, "Sorry about that."
"He has a crush on me, eh?" I laughed loudly.
Soon the show started and Landon, the lead singer of his band, got up and stood in front of the microphone. With a smile on his face, he speaks proudly, "Hey, Everybody! We're We're The Kids and we want to thank you for coming here to support us!"
The crowd cheered as I rolled my eyes, standing in the corner of the room with my arms crossed.
Landon continued, "This song is dedicated to a certain girl I've happened to be infatuated with for a long time... But she doesn't know it. It's called My Bitter Beauty."
His eyes look across the room as he sings, "Harsh words thrown at each other, but she doesn't know... she doesn't know... Someone I want but I really can't have, 'cause she hates my guts really damn bad... I have to pretend so she doesn't know a thing, bet she doesn't know this song is about her either..."
Somehow, his eyes met mine and I internally groaned. He's going to give me shit for lying to him about not seeing me at all.
"My bitter beauty, so goddamn sweet but so goddamn mean. Doesn't know that a guy like me could be in love with a girl like her..." Landon sings as he stares intensely at me.
My heart beats in my chest with full speed during the entire song. What the hell is his problem? And why do I have butterflies in my stomach?
I fight my way through the crowd, desperately wanting to leave this stupid venue and go home. Suddenly I felt someone's hand tug on my wrist and I turned around to be met with the eyes of Landon.
