Piper's POV

The Selection has been...interesting so far, to say the least. The prince has already gone on two dates, and both of the girls were beautiful. People like me won't stand a chance against the true ladies here. There are others that could last even longer than me.

I'm researching ideas for a project I've been working on. I think that we should have a themed dance to get to know each other much better.

I open up my binder that's filled with scattered pages of notes. I pull out one idea that's stuck with me.

Centuries ago, people used to throw masquerade balls. Everyone attending would wear a mask so their identity was a secret.

Feeling confident, I tuck the piece of paper into my pocket and leave my room. The Women's Room is bound to have other girls who like my ideas. Before I can loose confidence, I close my door.

I walk down the halls, already sort of becoming accustomed to the layout. I turn a corner and run straight into Jason.

"Sorry, I'm so sorry. I should have watched where I was going," I rush, brushing off his coat.

He holds up his hands, stopping me. "I'm perfectly fine, Miss. Piper. No need to worry."

"Are you sure? You're not hurt or anything?" I ask, still worried.

"I'm fine. Are you injured?"

"Of course not."

"May I escort you to your next location?" Jason asks, holding out his hand to me. I take it with a grin.

"If you insist, Sir Grace."

We walk down the hallway. The silence slowly grows awkward. I feel like I should say something.

"So how's-"

"What are-"

We laugh at each other. "You first," I insist.

"Alright. What are you so excited about? You're literally bouncing up and down just by walking."

"Am I? Well, I'm planning on sharing my idea with the other girls," I say, feeling a little nervous.

"What is it? Run it by me and see if you still feel nervous then," Jason says softly.

"Alright. I was thinking that we should have a masquerade ball. All of us should wear masks and dress up and just dance with each other. The guards could come too and dress up. The royal family would be there, of course. And the Selected girls could help make our own costumes," I say, eager to hear how Jason will react.

"That's a great idea!" A different voice praises.

I turn around and see the Prince standing a few feet away from us. I'm glad that I'm no longer holding Jason's hand.

Prince Percy is definitely cute, but still looks unimpressive next to Jason. Jason looks so much more dignified.

Speaking of Jason, I no longer see him. It's as if he disappeared right when the Prince arrived.

"Your...your highness," I stammer.

"Prince Percy will do. That was a good idea that you had. What is your name again?"

"I'm Piper McLean."

"Ah. Isn't your step-sister Drew?" He asks nervously.

"Unfortunately. The only thing that we have in common is the fact that we were both Selected."

I hear a small click behind me, but I ignore it. Must be a servant or someone.

"Anywho, I think that we should have a masquerade ball. Have you done any research, Miss. Piper?"

"Just Piper, please. And yes. People long ago used to have masquerade balls. I could show you some notes that I wrote down if you would like," I offer.

"Of course. Meet me in the garden in fifteen minutes."

With a wink, the Prince is gone. I hear a shuffle of skirts behind me. I turn and see a girl with straight blonde hair and green eyes. She's sees me looking and turns away.

I'm about to go back to my room to collect my notes when I notice something. The click. And the girl was holding a camera.

As quickly as I can run in heels, I follow after the girl, but she's gone. It's as if she disappeared into thin air.

Disappointed, I turn back to go to the gardens. A small rustle on the tapestry. A movement.

I sneak over and lift the tapestry. There's a door hidden behind it. Smiling, I open the door.

I see the girl hunched over a table with a camera in her hands. I walk towards her, as quiet as I can. I'm pretty certain that she can't hear me.

"I was wondering when she would arrive. Close the door, Luke," she says, as if she can see me. Right when I thought I was being silent.

I turn around to flee, but run into a tall, muscular boy who looks somewhat like Jason. He has a long scar running across his face. And he has the same exact eyes. My favorite shade of blue.

He smiles at me before slamming the door shut, leaving me trapped in the room. With two people I obviously can't trust.

I'm about to scream for help when I hear the girl take out something. I turn and see she's holding a knife in her right hand. The metal flashes against the fluorescent lighting.

I back up, but run into Luke. He holds me still, immobilizing me. I try to twist away, but I can't. He twists my wrist and I see stars flash across my eyes. My wrist throbs from where he touched it. It's like his touch is poison.

"Now, brother dear," the girl coos at the boy who just released my wrist.

I feel something heavy connect with the back of my head. I pass out with a helpless feeling, knowing that I won't be able to escape their clutches.

Uh-oh. D-R-A-M-A. What do you want to happen to Piper? And what do you think of her masquerade ball idea? Comment your answers.
