Leo's pov
"Well guys, it's November 30th. We've been here for about a year." I say. We all gather around the fireplace and it is around eight o'clock at night. We have all the blankets from our beds thrown out on the floor and covering us up. It's bitterly cold outside. Raph has already caught a cold and is sniffling non-stop. I wouldn't be surprised if it started to snow soon.
"I'm sorry that we couldn't have a nice and proper Thanksgiving meal." April says. Thanksgiving was a few days ago. We tried or best, but all we could prepare were some frozen hamburgers and some ice cream floats. (Not from Ice Cream Kitty, of course. We bought the ice cream.)
"That's okay, April. We tried our best." Mikey says.
I notice that the fire is getting low. Be fore I can stand up, Raph beats me to it.
"I'll go and get some fire wood. We need some." he says and he makes his way to the coat closet, which is under the stairs. He pulls out a large coat and a scarf, along with some boots that Donnie has made to fit our large feet.
(I know what you're thinking. A turtle wearing clothes? But let me tell you. It was probably around 10°F that night.)
Raph pulls them on, and walks to the door. We had put a rolled up towel in front of the door to keep the cold air from slipping in, which didn't help very much. Raph kicked the towel away and clamored outside.
We all just huddle around the dying fire. April begins to shiver, and Donnie and Casey share thier warmth with her by hugging.
She's gonna kill those two someday.
We can hear the wind start to pick up, rattling the branches of the bushes outside the window.
We had the kitchen light and the t.v. on, but suddenly, the power went out leaving us in the dark, the only light coming from the glowing embers of the fire.
"I better go take a look at the breaker box." Donnie says as he lights a candle in the fireplace and tosses the blankets that were encasing him to the side, giving out a little shiver. April gathers up the blankets and piles them up onto her. Donnie then walks away into the laundry room to mess around with the breakers.
"Careful with those breakers, Donnie!" I shout after him. He shakes it off.
"Yeah, yeah. If done this before, Leo."
The door then swings open to reveal Raph holding about three fire logs. He sets them in the floor and closes the door, placing the towel back into the crack underneath it. He takes off his boots. I just realize that he is covered in a fine white powder. Mikey stands up, tearing the blankets off of himself.
"Is it snowing!?!" he asks no one in particular. He races to the window to see the snowfall as Raph puts his snow gear back into the coat closet, then picks up the wood and begins to shove it into the fireplace.
"It's snowing pretty hard." Raph says and sniffles. He's pretty congested, and it kinda sounds like 'ips snowin breddy ard'. I feel sorry for him, we've looked for cold medicine, but couldn't find any. Not even Donnie had any.
"Wow guys. Come look at this! Isn't it pretty?!" Mikey says with his face pressed against the glass. Donnie comes into the room.
"Well, we won't have power for a while. It's snowing really heavily and- oh, you've heard already."
We all stand up and make our way to the window, except Raph, who keeps trying to shove a too big log into the fireplace.
The snow was very pretty.
"Guys, we've all seen snow before." Raph says, finnally giving up on the log and getting comfortable next to the fire, actually taking my place.
"Yeah. But the city ruined it. All the cars and dirty sludge." Mikey says.
"Now look at it."
The snow is probably already an inch think in some places. It's falling at an angle very quickly, being carried by the strong winds. The moon and stars cast a bluish glow in the ground.
"Yeah, so?" Raph says.
Mikey jumps away from the window and faces all of us.
"Can we please have a Christmas? Even if it's small." he asks.
I love Mikey with all of my heart. His kindness and innocence. I'm pretty sure Christmas was the last thing on our minds but it was probably the first on Mikey's.
We all look at each other.
"Sure." I say.
Mikey runs up to me and gives me a ginormous bear hug.
"Thank you Leo! You're the best!" he screams. Then he skips off to the kitchen humming 'deck the halls'.
I smile to myself. Christmas was always his favorite holiday. Splinter would always try to make each of us something special, even if it was just some new wraps or bandanas. He would also try to find a little something else for us to eat besides algae and worms. One year, he had found an unopened bag of chips that we all had to share. He would also tell us all the Christmas stories of Santa and his magical reindeer and the elves that make all the boys and girls toys every year on Christmas. All our gifts were from Santa every year. Sensei tried his best. We have a lot of good memories around Christmas time. Splinter also taught us all the holiday songs like 'jingle bells' and 'white Christmas'.
"Leo, are you crying?" April asks.
I bring my hand up to my eyes.
"A little. I was just remembering our childhood with Sensei."
She pats my shoulder a little.
Mikey returns with bowls, spoons, a carton of milk, and Captain Crunch cereal.
"This is our celebration of the biggining of the holidays!" Mikey says as he passes around the bowls and spoons as he pours milk and cereal in them. He run as to put the milk away. He comes back holding up his bowl.
"To the holidays!" he says,
"To the holidays!" we all reply.
We all get comfortable next to the fire and eat our cereal, talking about all the things we could do. We finally settle on trying to find a tree, to start with.
We finish our cereal and eventually, we all fall asleep with Christmas on our minds.
