Jason sat in his Maths Lesson the next day, his head slumped on his hand and his eyes gazing at the ceiling.
"51...52...53..." he mumbled to himself as he counted the tiles on the ceiling.
"Mr Herring!" The teacher snapped and Jason jolted, sitting himself upright and staring at his teacher.
She opened her mouth to, undoubtedly lecture him when the classroom door opened.
Her attention was whipped away instantly and Jason slumped back into his seat with disinterest.
"Great! Now I've lost count..." he groaned, staring at the wide spread ceiling.
He looked up to see that a tall, scrawny boy had entered and was now speaking to Miss Hemmon.
His scruffy hair was a dark brown and he was wearing a pair of squared, black glasses.
Jason felt a tap on his shoulder and turned to see Mason sat behind him.
"Watch out mate, nerd alert!" He said and his comment recieved a snigger from Drew sat at his side. Jason laughed and then stared at the empty seat beside him.
"Shit!" He said under his breath and Mason and Drew laughed again.
"Good luck mate" Mason said, patting his shoulder again before leaning back into his chair as Miss Hemmon turned back to the class. Jason swivelled round to face the front.
"Sorry for that Class but it appears we have a new student joining us... what did you say your name was again dear?" She said turning to the boy who mumbled something.
"Ah yes, Alfie Wood! Now if you could take a seat wherever you fancy" she said to the boy.
Jason prayed he would sit beside someone else, there were plenty of empty seats. Alfie walked up the steps heading for the seat beside Jason. Great! Just fucking great!
"Okay good...maybe you could teach him something" she coughed, saying the last bit under her breath but Jason heard her.
Alfie walked over and silently sat beside Jason as the teacher continued the lesson.
Jason hadn't been focused on the lesson before so why should he start now? He was going to use this new event to his advantage.
"Hey, I'm Jason"
"Hi" the boy said, flashing him a slight smile as he began to unpack, getting out a calculater, pens and a wod of paper.
"What do you need all that paper for?" Jason asked in a purposefully annoying voice and he put his head in his hands, putting on a look of intrigue.
"Ummm...to write notes and calculations...where's your paper?" He asked cautiously as if trying to decide what Jason was playing at.
"Oh I don't need paper! Memory of gold!" He replied, tapping his head with a smug look and he heard a snigger from behind him. He ignored it and focused on Alfie.
"Hmm...well you can borrow mine if you want" Alfie said, sounding unconvinced and Jason found the new kids tolerance to be frustrating. He wasn't going to give up though.
"Nope, like I said...I don't need to make notes" Jason insisted and Alfie nodded, giving Jason a long look before turning back to the front.
Jason spent the rest of the lesson twiddling his pencil and watching Alfie write endless notes.
How can someone actually pay attention to this crap? He thought, slightly amazed but also amused.
When the bell rang Jason was eager to hop out of his seat, his bag already packed minutes before the bell.
He was ready to escape to lunch when someone grabbed him by the arm. Jason swivelled round to see it was Alfie stopping him.
"What is it?" Jason asked, feeling slightly agitated as he wanted to go see Amelia.
"I was wondering if I could have lunch with you...I dont really know anyone?" Alfie asked, looking at his feet and Jason couldn't help but laugh.
Why did the new kid want to have lunch with him? Even after he had been purposely annoying.
"Come on mate!" He heard Mason call from behind.
"No sorry, can't" Jason stumbled, unable to think of a reasonable excuse and he hurried off to Mason and Drew who were impatiently waiting for him at the door.
He heard Alfie mumble a disappointed "okay..." as he left him there alone.
Jason couldn't help feeling slightly bad for being rude but ignored the feeling when he joined Mason and Drew.
