Until

42 7 4

we loved each other until
the bright lights of the city became dull,
the jambalaya tasted bland,
the black coffee stayed weak.

when he left, it took a while
for the lights to brighten
for the food to get its taste back
for the coffee to waken me.

but after he was fully gone,
the lights were never as bright
the jambalaya never as spicy,
the coffee never as strong,
as it all was before he came.

or else,

we loved each other
until the lights of the city couldn't be brighter,
until the jambalaya made our tongues burn,
until the coffee was so strong it made us dizzy.

but when he left,
the lights slowly faded,
the jambalaya began to lose its taste,
the coffee could barely keep me awake.

and after he was fully gone,
the lights were barely noticeable,
the jambalaya was completely tasteless,
and the coffee, well, it was just colored water.
