Riley's POV

Monday.

I walk into school with Max, who just seems really out of it today. She isn't even wearing makeup. Max always wears makeup in public. Her hair was just piled into a bun and she had a bow clipped in it. The bow my dad gave her, to be more specific. She was wearing an Escape the Fate shirt, faded straight jeans and converse. Max always - or at least, usually - wears some kind of wacky colored skinny jeans and heals or boots of some sort.

"Are you okay today, babe? You don't...seem like yourself."

Max nods, "I over slept and didn't have time to make myself look the way I usually do

Max nods, "I over slept and didn't have time to make myself look the way I usually do."

"Late night again?"

"Mhm." She says, rubbing her face tiredly.

"Well, maybe you should tell your mom and this Adam guy that going out so much isn't good for you."

Max sighs, "We didn't go out." She says, heading to her locker.

"Then what's up? Isn't the reason you've been so tired lately because the three of you have been spending so much time together?"

"Oh, we've been spending lots of time together." Max spits, opening her locker and beginning to gather her things.

"What's that supposed to mean?"

Max doesn't give an answer.

"Max...You know that if things are starting to get bad at your place again that you can tell me, right?"

Max shuts her locker, "I can handle it."

"Max..."

"It's okay, Riley, really."

I take her hand, "Max, you don't have to go through this alone."

Max gives a small smile, "I know." She says before kissing my cheek, "I'm just trying to get through it."

"Get through it? How do you know it'll end?"

Max pauses, then speaks, "Well, it's going to, isn't it?"

"Is it?"

Max pauses again, then sighs, "I don't know." She admits.

"Well, our door is always open if you need us."

Max nods, "I know. Thank you. I'm just kind of going through a rough patch and don't really know what to do. And now it's to the point where I'm coming to school looking like this."

I give her a small smile, "Hey. For what it's worth, no matter how much makeup you do or don't wear and no matter how you dress, you're still the most beautiful girl I've ever seen."

Max smiles, "I love you."

"I love you too."

The warning bell rings.
