Chapter Twelve :: mieux que l'amour

It is the day after Calum and Michael had solved their issue and the house seems to be brighter than ever; Officer Hemmings have come to the office early, and seems to be enjoying Alex's home made pancakes. Calum is currently sitting across Michael and eating his bowl of cereal because, pancakes are apparently 'unhealthy' and he wasn't going to 'fool himself into believing that they're not' by adding a blueberry on them.

Although everyone seem to be enjoying their time, they all have one question they are keeping at the pit of their stomach, which keeps on finding its way out.

"...And so when the girl left, I was very hungry and I ate the other half of the sandwich that she didn't even touch. Turns out, she was on the phone and came back to finish the other piece." explains Josh and everybody laughs in unison. Calum and Michael in particular smile a little longer than everybody else does, just staring at each other before the green eyed boy faces his plate again.

"Okay is anybody else not going to say it?" Ashley asks and Officer Hemmings- who suggested to be called Luke- shifts a bit on his seat and looks at the blue haired girl. "Jesus fuckin christ.." she mutters, only to have Tyler raise an eyebrow at her language.

"Oh shit sorry." she apologises and Alex face palms himself at the girl's foul language before standing up to do the dishes. With everybody running away for they don't want to be responsible for clearing up after themselves, the subject Ashley brought up is quickly dismissed.

"Do you need help with that?" asks Michael, and before the boy even gets a chance to answer, he takes off his jacket to join him.

It is after a couple of dishes that they start talking, and once they did, it feels almost as if they should have been best friends all along. From music taste to favourite video games, Alex and Michael are completely the same.

"I can not believe you actually like Bowling For Soup; I thought nobody knew them." Michael smiles as he dries up the dishes which are given to him by Alex. The laughter dries out for a bit before one of them is speaking again.

"So you and Calum.." Alex starts, but doesn't finish the sentence as he wiggles his eyebrows facing Michael. The green eyed boy raises his eyebrows in perplexity but soon understands what the other boy is suggesting.

"Ohhh, what? No, me and Calum are not a thing." he answers, making sure he keeps a low volume this time because he doesn't want to offend his friend. He believes anybody, whether they are in to boys or not, would find Calum attractive; from his diamond cutting jawline to his perfectly painted eyebrows, he has the qualities every person wants. And Michael wasn't going to deny that.

"Are you saying you are not in love with him?" Alex asks and for some reason, Michael finds this question harder to answer or deny than the first one. After a few seconds of thinking, he rests his hands on the table and supports his body to sit on it.

"You see, what me and Calum have.. it's better than love. People spend most of their life searching for affection in shallow trees and dark places; and when they finally find someone who cares a little bit more than the last one did, they confuse it for love."

"As a devoted feminist, I hate to say this, but love is nothing but a word created to entertain Victorian women when their marriage started fading. As a society, we have developed the word in to representing other things than what it really means. I am not in love with Calum; I trust him, and I admire the effort he puts in to being a good person... although he acts like a jerk sometimes."

He smiles as he notices the brown haired boy smiling ridiculously at his back as he hears all these lovely words. They are so overwhelming for Calum, and he is so lucky to have a friend like Michael. "So you guys are soul-mates?" Alex questions, and this time Michael has Calum by his side as he answers.

"Yeah, something like that..." His voice drifts off as his attention turns in to the door bell which rang three times consecutively and stopped.

Luke is the one who opens the door and everybody gathers around him to see what is going. A man dressed in a full suit - most of them recognise him from the courtroom as he is the prosecutor- is standing by their door.

"Daniels, what are you doing here?" asks Tyler and everybody tries their best to stay calm and not make a big scene when the two opposition teams talk. Ashley and Josh stood next to the book stand which was the closest thing to the door that could occupy them and landed their ears carefully at the conversation.

Michael and Calum took a seat on the staircase, waiting for whatever is about to come. Tyler looks back at them and motions them to come forwards with his hand.

"Good to see you Clifford. And Hood." The man greets and takes out a hand but nobody shakes it. He clears his throat before putting his hands back in his pockets.

"What do you want?" questions Calum, because he doesn't ever want to see the man's face. He almost ruined everything for everybody by pushing it too far when Calum took the stand, and so, his first impressions weren't that great as you can see.

"We have found new evidence to support our case; my team went back to investigate and well, we found new DNA on the hand of the chair, near where your father was killed." Michael almost feels sick when the man calls Mr Clifford 'his father' but Tyler jumps in quickly before the green eyed boy says anything back.

"Wait, wait... you did all of this without thinking about addressing us, or the judge? Have you even been to law school?" remarks Tyler and Mr Daniels comes close to his face angrily, probably a little closer than Tyler wishes, and he can smell the man's mint gum almost as if it is the only good feature of him.

"If you think your little boy is as innocent, as you think he is, then it doesn't matter how I got the information." he responds back and Luke comes in between the two, putting his hands on Mr Daniel's chest  so that he backs off. 'Are you okay?' the officer mumbles to Tyler only to get a dirty glare from him before all of them got off the porch and inside the house, closing the door again.

But maybe they got back in the building too early, because if they stayed, they would have known why the man in the black suit hated Michael so much.
