“Are you sure? The human will be safe in the pack house and the girl isn’t alone, it would be more comforting if they saw their own pack members.” Matt spoke quietly to Avery on the couch. It was quite curious to see the way he looked at her and the way she so easily blushed, but unlike her I heard the slight growl at the word human.
“That human happens to have a name, thank you.” I pitched in; attempting to keep my voice light, but it was hard to pretend it didn’t bother me…all of it. The way Avery just got up and left without a word after we told her our history before we met her, the way she shamelessly started flirting with Matt and even the way she doesn’t defend her alpha or call her by her name.
“Oh that’s alright.” Avery laughed, dragging her nails down Matt’s exposed bicep, which had him practically purring, his eyes glowing a hazel green.
“Avery, can I speak with you in the kitchen please?” I asked, getting up from my seat.
“Can’t it wait? I’m in th-”
“No it cannot. Now!” I growled, not even waiting for her to finish, earning a frosty glare from the abandoned beta. “Don’t worry I’ll bring her back, and then you can go back to eye raping each other until your eyes fall out.” I said over my shoulder as I pushed Avery through the door, slamming it shut behind us.
“What the hell is your problem Amethyst Kanti Avery! Leaving without a word is understandable, but ignoring the disrespect of your Alpha?!” I snarled, slowly advancing on her.
“I don’t have a problem.” Avery shrugged glaring right back at me. “We have to pretend that our alpha is not here and that Amielya is human, no? So that is what I am doing.” My hands flickered blue at the way she snarled Amielya’s name.
“You may not like how we kept you in the dark about a lot of things, but it was for your protection!” I hissed.
“My protection? For what I can tell it is Amielya who needs the protecting, not me!” We were almost nose to nose now, glaring harshly at one another. Her hands were shaking, balled into fists, as mine glowed a violent blue, both our powers pushing against the others, but being beta does have its advantages. I smirked as Avery turned her head slightly down reluctantly. Being as strong as she is, Amielya’s alpha power compares only to that of the elders, which means mine ranks as an Alpha and Avery as a Beta, and though we do our best to mask that fact now was a…special occasion.
“She does all she can to protect those she loves, Avery. She always puts her friends, family and pack first, before her safety. The only way I knew about all those things is because I was there to witness it myself. She feared that if anyone knew than the witches would target them too. She never meant for this to happen…” I said, softening my voice and reining in my power.
“Yeah well nobody ever plans for those things now do they?” Avery laughed harshly, though she too reined her power in and kept her head bowed.
“Amielya does…don’t tell me you haven’t noticed how she barely shifts.” I said, hopping onto the counter as Avery searched the fridge, making me smile to see how fast we moved on from being at each other’s throat to being friends again. She paused to look at me questioningly.
“The witch has control of her wolf?!” She asked bewildered.
“Something like that. The witch always took control of her mind only when her wolf was close to the edge, that’s why she barely shifts…she fears losing control around those she loves and wants only to protect.” I answered with a sad smile. I had only seen her wolf a handful of times, but it isn’t something you easily forget. Beautiful black wolf with one dark auburn streak and one blonde.
