Dan's place...California"So, Kat. What do you want to do today?" Dan asked through bites of his chocolate croissant. I guess they really like croissants in this house, and I'm not complaining. "After all, it is Saturday. Maybe we could go to the mall and get you somethings for your room. If you wanted of course." He concluded.
"Going shopping would be nice." I replied just as softly as I had been before.
Jacky sat across from me. She seemed worried. She scrutinized my face as if she saw something no-one else did. I wonder what that is.
"That's great! Maybe Jacky could come with us if you don't mi-"He was soon cut off by Jacky.
"No no. You too go and spend some well deserved quality time together. I have stuff to do anyways," Jacky kindly declined.
"Oh okay. Well I guess it's just me and my daughter then," Dan exclaimed. Something about that statement just didn't rub me the right way, just like that photo.
I was pretty sure I had seen it before. Somewhere. I just couldn't pin point where. But I will figure it out.
"Jacky could you please excuse us for a second," Dan said while clearing his throat.
"Um..Yeah okay. Sure," And with that she scurried of to the next room, I assume is the kitchen, with her plate of unfinished bacon stuffed croissant.
Dan stood and walked around the table into a room next to the one Jacky had just disappeared into. Five minutes later he returned with a file unknown to me. Flipping through the pages mindlessly, he made his way back to his seat."I got this file from the institute. I hope you don't mind but I asked for it so I can keep up with what has been happening with you the past two years,"
Well why the fuck didn't you come visit at least once in two months these past two and A HALF years?
"Cool." He seemed taken aback by the improvement in my speech.
"Umm. Yeah. Tha-that's what I did." He stuttered. "I read here that you have um... nightmares daily and you scream everynight. But last night I didn't here anything from your bedroom. I'm guessing it's because you like it here..or maybe you didn't sleep because you didn't want any nightmare. Just tell me. What are these nightmares about?"
You should have come visit. Maybe you would know.
"I don't know. It's always just a figure chasing me through the woods. And in every nightmare I trip on a tree's root and it grabs me then I wake up." I explained, running the nightmare in my head like a broken record.
"So. You are telling me that for a whole two years, you have been having the same bad dream?"
"Basically,''
"Oh god. Kat. I'm so sorry sweetheart," and with that he reach over to me and pulled me into a hug.
Two and a half years. No visit.
Pulling away from his broad chest I simply mumbled a "it's okay." that he didn't seem to hear.
I turned in my seat and I think I caught a glimpse of Jacky around the corner of the room she had disappeared into half and hour ago. Wait. Was she eavesdropping? Well I didn't care. Just curious. She saw me look at her and quickly scurried of deeper into the room.
I went and followed Jacky to where she was-which was indeed the kitchen-and found her leaning over the sink and staring up at the high ceiling.
"Hi," I greeted, with caution.
"Oh. Hi. Kate. I'm sorry about eavesdropping like that. It's just-" she was quick to apologize.
"No it's fine. It's no big deal. I'm not used to privacy anyways. You know. With the institute and all and I before that I was too young for it," I said. Dismissing her apology and realising that I shouldn't have said the last part. "I mean. It's okay. Shit. I didn't mean it like that." She looked surprised about my use of profanity. I blame Jessica.
"Oh. Okay well thanks. Enjoy your day then." Then she was gone.
Well done'kat', well done.
