St. Andrews Church...CaliforniaI never thought this day would come so soon. Nothing would have prepared me for this.
"Babe the service is about to start. You okay?" Christian asked me from behind the closed bathroom door.
"I'll be right out."
There was a brief moment of silence that I thought he was gone. "Can I come in?"
"Sure."
He opened the door cautiously. I looked at him through the mirror as he stepped closer. "It just doesn't feel real. It feels like it's all just a terrible nightmare that won't stop."
He turned me around to face him and he wrapped his arms around me while I cried. "Shh. It's all gonna be okay. Right now you just have to be strong. If not for yourself then for Jessica."
"I know," I said into his chest. "But it's so difficult."
"I know baby. I know. But I think that right now, we should go and join everyone else so the service doesn't start without us. Does that sound good to you?" He asked.
I nodded and we both left the bathroom for the main hall. Everyone was already seated with me, Spencer and some of Jessica's parents that flew up from South Africa sitting in the front row.Turns out they haven't heard from Jessica since she was admitted to the hospital. They didn't even know she was admitted until last week when we called them up to the States.
The service started and people began their speeches about Jessica. It was an emotional time for most guests.
When it was my turn, I could bearly walk up to the podium without feeling like I was going to throw up.
"I must say, of all Mondays I have had in my lifetime. This one is by far the worst. If I had had someone tell me a month ago that at sixteen I would be planning my bestfriends funeral, I probably would have laughed in their facees. But life happens I guess," I said through sniffles. "I remember the first day I was admitted to the institute. I got in there with no family back home and no friends in the institute. I was basically...lonely. I didn't talk to anyone for a month because I was angry and empty. That was until Jessica thought it was time for me to help her escape the hospital. Clearly it didn't work but it did earn me a sister."
My speech was brief and the guest applauded when I was done and I took my seat.
"The rest of the burial will continue at the Orbins Cemetery. Please may everyone meet there in half an hour for the burial," The priest said after I sat down.
Row by row people started for Jessica's coffin and said their goodbyes before they left for the cemetery.
Spencer and his parents rode with Jessica's coffin in the hearseand I rode with Christian and Jacky.
The ride was filled with sad silence before Christian broke it. "What do you think you're gonna do after this?"
"I haven't thought as far yet. But I'm probably gonna go back to school like I was supposed to," I'm excited that my life will be back to normal tomorrow..
Well, as normal as it can get. No more chasing after evidence that will work against Daniel, nor planning funerals. Of course I'm bummed that I don't qualify for the kickboxing competion so I can keep busy, but I still can train with Christian so I stay just as distracted."We are here," Jacky announced as she parked her car on the dirt road of the cemetery. Far down was another family having a burial and further was someone visiting a loved one.
Our group of mourners gathered under a white tent close to a six foot deep hole. As we approached the tent, Jessica's coffin was being lifted out of the hearse.
The priest stood at the end of the long red carpet as Spencer, Christian and their friends carried the coffin towards him. "We are gathered here today for the burial of Jessica Knowsley..." he started off but something caught my eye far behind him and I got distracted. I tried to see what it was but everything went still again and suddenly I saw Jessica's coffin being put on the ropes to be lowered.
When it reached the bottom, a fired shot was heard from behind us all. In my mind, a scene from the night Jessica was shot played in front of me. The vision came and went and I heard screams and cries from behind as the priest fell into the deep hole.
He was shot dead.
My body froze on the spot as some people began clearing the area. I felt someone pull me away towards Jacky's and when we got in, someone knocked on the window waving a piece of paper frantically. Jacky rolled down her window to attend to the woman. "Jacky. You have to read this," she said quickly.
Jacky read the letter and I saw her facial expression change drastically. She looked at me through the rearview mirror and I saw fear flash across her reddening face as she passed me the letter.I read through the letter five times and everytime I did, my throat started to close up even more.
"What does it say?" Christian asked me. I passed him the letter and I was sitting there trying to process everything.
Watch yourselves Kate and Jacky. Next time the bullet will go through your own heads.
