“Because I like you” her words slipped out of her mouth and caused my stomach to form a pit, she liked me? Why did she like me, she was my friend?
“What do you mean you like me Penelope, I like you too but” I said before she cut me off
“No, Daisy I don’t like you as a friend, I like you more than that, I’ve had a crush on you for a while now, and I couldn’t stand the fact that Joey seemed to like you too” her words were rapid and she was short of breath, I could hear the desperation in her voice as she tried to hold herself together.
“Penelope, I don’t see you like that, I’m interested in guys” I said gently trying to let her know that I didn’t care that she was a lesbian or anything, but that I wouldn’t see her more than just a friend.
“Can you just give us a chance please, I know this may seem all new to you but, being just friends with you is difficult..” she dragged the word difficult out as if it was tortuous, and everything around me started to spin, I was confused and I just wanted crawl into a hole and stay there.
“No, Penelope we can’t be more than just friends, I like guys and only guys, I’m sorry if I have to be straightforward about it, but it’s the way it has to be, if being just friends with me is too difficult for you, than we should just leave this friendship right here.” I tried being gentle about it but I couldn’t let her talk me into something that I wasn’t going to do. She was quiet for several minutes and I was ready to hang up the phone when she suddenly broke the silence.
“Okay, I respect your decision, I don’t want us to lose our friendship, I’m willing to set my feelings for you aside” she didn’t seem too keen on the idea, but she sounded a bit happy that we could still be friends. I breathed a sigh of relief and was calmer at the moment.
“Great, I’m glad we can manage to be friends, but please don’t lie to me, and don’t make up lies about other people.” I said glad this conversation will soon be behind us.
“Deal,” she mumbled, which caused me to chuckle.
After our conversation, I decided to take a nap, I was exhausted and the sun at the beach had weared off on me. I slipped under the covers and, got comfortable I had washed my sheets the day before and they smelled wonderful, vanilla and honey, perfect for me to sleep peacefully like a baby. I closed my eyes thinking about my brother, remembering memories that I know will no longer come back.
“Siiss,” I heard a faint voice far far away, and I assumed I was dreaming. I ignored the voice and kept on sleeping, yet the voice kept calling my name, and I felt a small hand tapping me gently on my shoulder. I opened my eyes slowly taking in Victoria’s small petite image.
“Yes, baby what happened” I said rubbing my eyes trying to figure out how long I had slept for, only to realize that it was already dark outside.
“I’m hungry, can you make me mac and cheese, please” she said fidgeting with her small hands and looking back at me.
“Of course cupcake, do you want a hot dog also? I asked already knowing her response. She smiled and nodded her head excitedly. I got out of bed and made my way to the kitchen, preparing her food and deciding what I should eat as well.
“You’re finally up, had a nice nap?” my dad asked me walking into the kitchen to give me a kiss on my forehead.
“Yea I did, how long was I asleep for?” I asked curious still sleepy and tired.
“For about 3 hours, I’ve been making some calls for work and Victoria told me she was hungry, but you know that she doesn’t like it when I cook, so I told her to wake you up” he said looking guilty. My father was not the best chef in town, or in any town as a matter of fact, he was an expert in burning everything.
