''Where are we?''.Louis moved in his seat, and I didn't answer as the question remained in the air. I slowly drove in the small town, still paying attention to what was happening in the corner of my eye. Amber sat with her face almost pressed against the window, breathing in as she saw the familiar sights of the town she once lived in.
''Oh'', was the only thing that left Louis after that, as he realized by himself where we were.
The town was dead, almost scaring as it made me feel quite numb inside. It was a drive through town, as Amber said back in Salt Lake City. The city was basically build along railroad tracks. Houses, a couple shops and everything surrounded by trees and a one, almost never ending, sand colored mountain growing at the horizon where blue sky began to show, behind the grey clouds.
I remembered what Amber said about her leaving. I would too. This city was dead, probably just as much as every person's, that lived here, dream. Escape, that's what I would've called it. Because at least, from the outside, the city was totally insentient, and the ones that didn't escape, felt this numb feeling inside of them that I felt at the moment, but probably hundred times worse.
''H-here'', Amber suddenly spoke as she scratched out her arm, gesturing at the road we were coming closer, ''This is my street'', she said.
''Do you want me to..?'', and her answer surprised me.
''Yes. Yes please''.
And I turned. The next minute, I had stopped outside a one-storey house, alike mostly of the house in this town. The house was white with blue painted wood around doors and windows. A small porch was found outside a simple wooden door, with a couple steps that I already could hear the squeaking sound of by just seeing them, reaching up to the porch. What make me frown was the fact that even though the house seemed freshly painted, and the family had put a few bushes here and there, it still looked so lifeless and at some point worn out.
''G-guys'', Louis suddenly exclaimed lowly, ''Th-there's a dog''.
And he was right, because the next second a big Rottweiler were running towards us, barking loudly. I believe that if the high fence wasn't there, making the dog stop, Louis would've probably shit his pants.
''Honey!'', Amber suddenly exclaimed happily and before me or Louis could look at her, she had closed the door after her and began running towards the dog, leaving me and Louis in the car.
''I-is she insane? The dog will eat her up!'', Louis almost screamed, but I kept following Ambers movements.
She opened the small gate to the yard at the side of the house, that was surrounded by the high fence. The dog went silent as soon as Amber begun to carefully walk towards it, saying something we couldn't hear. A thought of the dog ripping off the hard disk around her ankle made me slightly smile for a second. Then again, I had a chance to drive away and leave her in this shit hole. But the next second, the dog jumped up on her as she hunched down in front of her. The dog's short tale was freaking out as it went back and forth. Amber's laugh reached our ears as she hugged her dog, letting it lick her all over the face.
A amused smile formed on my lips.
''Excited to make out with her soon again?'', I asked amused and the next second Louis arm hit my chest, and I groaned as a laugh escaped my lips.
''Shut the fuck up'', Louis warned without looking at me.
What happened next, made both me and Louis quite unsure of what to do next. Because the wooden door opened, and a older woman walked out on the porch. Even from far, you could see the dark blue eyes, just as Ambers. Her hair was almost white, and it was long. She was dressed in a white t-shirt with rails over her shoulders which belonged to the jeans jumpsuit she wore, knees dirty of soil. Her eyes observed our car, before she walked down the steps. As laughter reached her ears she stopped. As she turned, and noticed Amber laying on the grass with the dog over her, laughing, she froze.
