Gazelle and Carmela walked in silence, apart from some conversation they had at the beginning. As they neared the bridge, Carmela could feel the air round her fingers tingling. This day was going to be extremely interesting. She stole a look at Gazelle's face. All she saw was eager anticipation shining out of her face and the resentment in her sparked once again. She had not realized how conveniently and easily her best friend now seemed to be her deadliest enemy; the most lethal threat to her sovereignty. Shrugging off the feeling of immense hatred bottling up in her chest and the ugly look on her face, she hurried to follow Gazelle who had advanced further, lost in her own thoughts, not realizing the tempest intensifying inside Carmela.

Feeling Carmela beside her once again, Gazelle turned around and gazed at her, smiling slightly. Carmela too gave her a small smile. But there was something wrong with her. Her smile was more of a grimace; her heart was throbbing with a weird ungovernable jealously; something she had never felt before in her life. Apparently, Gazelle too noticed her uncertainty, silence, and her unusual smile. She took in her appearance completely, absorbing in all the details and then asked, hesitantly.

'You, okay?'

Carmela, who was too busy in her thoughts looked at her wan at her interruption, not having heard her question.

'Sorry?'

Gazelle giggled at her expression and shook her head.

'You are losing it you know?'

Carmela sighed. Yeah. She knew that. She however was not going to give Gazelle the satisfaction of defeat. She assessed the moment and then glared hard and long at Gazelle. They both stopped, Gazelle too surprised to act. When Carmela finally spoke, her voice was colder than cold daggers going through the skin.

'I think it's time you realized, you are not supposed to make jokes at my expense. Understand?

Gazelle stared at Carmela, in deep shock. She did not know what had gotten into Carmela that she was behaving thus. She did not feel any other emotion..... Just really hurt. But then Carmela had been doing a splendid job at making her feel down these days.

'But... Caramels....'

Carmela shook her head, eyebrows raised.

'That's it. This conversation's over. We should get on. We'll be late.'

Gazelle looked down and then thinking probably this was the best, closed her mouth and ran to catch up with Carmela who had already taken stride. This behaviour was really getting to her now. The warmer she was, the colder Carmela became. She knew she might get rude if she spoke now so she just bit back the angry retorts that rose to her lips and fell in steps behind Carmela. The rest of the journey was completed in absolute silence.
