"Team 2. Do you copy?"
"ye. . .ir. . .k. . ."
"Ben, please speak clearly. Do you copy?"
"Ma'am. . .I. . .kn--" and with that, the line goes dead. Lauren with a frustrated sigh turns towards Four.
"Signals to weak." she says to no one in particular.
As Christina told me, Lauren is the new head of dauntless. I look outside the window of her office with my heart pounding against my chest.
Where are you Sam?
Zeke seems to notice my troubled expression and says, "We'll find him Tris. Don't worry."
I nod unconvinced.
I feel a hand on my shoulder,"You should get some rest, It's late anyways. " says Christina. I rise from my seat along with weakness washing all over me. I haven't eaten since morning. Black spots begun to appear in my vision threatening to engulf me into darkness, I would've fallen first-face on the wooden floor if Four hadn't caught me. He tightly grips my arms pulling me up straight and questions in a concerned voice, "When was the last time you ate?"
"In the morning."
He furrows his eyebrows and glances towards the clock, it reads 12:04am. "Guys, stay here and keep searching, I'll take her to the cafeteria." Informs Four with his eyes in me.
Four guides me out of Lauren's office into the elevator. He presses one of the buttons and silently stands opposite to me. The silence isn't awkward, but definitely isn't comfortable. His expression is the way it always is. Stern. . .and intimidating. You never know what he is thinking, you never know what he is feeling, and that's what makes you want to know more about him and that's what makes him the subject in your head. . .or at least in my head.
On hearing the elevators 'ding' we walk out just in the way we walked in. In silence. Every time I'm around him I have the insane urge to touch him. To hold his arm, hand, anywhere but that's where the questions start. Hold his arm and do what? Say 'hi'? Talk? And if yes, talk about what?
And the weird part is I still have this 'urge' with Sam missing. I should be stressed.
I should be stressed? Of course I'm stressed!
Yes, indeed I am stressed, but with Four around. . .
I shake my thoughts away and concentrate on Four's voice, "Sit down. I'll get some food." and now there's the mysterious change in emotion and voice. From concerned to being stern. I always wonder what his real name is.
"Here," Four says snapping me out of my reverie,"eat this."
I look down to see a hamburger and some vegetables. I take a bite of it and then realized how hungry I was. My stomach feels like and empty pit. Driven by hunger, my stomach makes a weird noise. My cheeks began to flush making Four chuckle.
"I see someone's hunger." he teases.
"hmmm." I reply chewing my delicious meal.
I notice the whole cafeteria is empty. Of course, not every one eat at midnight. As soon as I finish I stand in order to keep my plate.
"Give it to me. I'll keep it." Four offers. I kindly accept and hand him the plate. Just as he leaves my mind wanders to Sam. I begun to feel stressed again. He obviously didn't leave by himself, and if someone kidnapped, why?
"Earth to Tris." says Four snapping me of my thoughts. I stay silent and start towards the elevator with Four by my side. We walk into the elevator as the door closes behind us.
"We'll find him you know." Four says taking a step towards me.
"I-I know, It's just. . .I'm worried. I--"
"I understand how you feel."
"Really?" I say with a hint of sarcasm.
He looks up at me, "Yes. Tris, she would just go away risking her life. S-She almost got killed so many times. . .I would worry so much."
I intake a sharp breath. Four never told me anything about his past. Not Zeke. Not Christina. Nobody. But he's telling me.
"During the insurgence," he continues in a sorrowful voice, "she left me. In the middle of the night. Just left, without a good bye to get herself killed by Jeanine."
His words turn into a whisper, I have to move closer in order to hear him, "At every step she took, I-I fought with her. Every decision she made was rational, and I always fought with her, saying her decisions were irrational. But the truth was I was the one making irrational decisions.
"I only got a month with her." his voice gets lower with each word, and my heart aches more with each word,"In only a month she changed. She thought me I was worth loving and being loved. God! I loved her so much, she was my life. But in the end. . .she left me. Forever. Left me with nothing to live for. Without a good bye. She was gone. B--"
I couldn't take it anymore, "Please. Don't." That's all I could say. I was on the verge of tears myself. Four continues like I had never spoken.
"But here's the fact: My Tris never left me. She's here. Standing with me, just that she doesn't remember me. " It takes me a moment to register his words. I can't be that brave and selfless Tris.
"I'm a very selfish person, and she was a very selfless being." he smiles a sad smile and lifts my face with one hand as he bends down to me.
He's so close that his cool breath tickles my skin, "that's exactly what she said."
"But--" he cuts me off with a kiss. A slow gentle kiss. He snakes his arms around me and presses his body to mine until there is no space left to close. As each second passes the kiss grows more passionate and hungry.
Ding! I hear the elevator, but he doesn't pull away. Just then I hear an announcement.
"Four, please report to the leaders office. I repeat please report to the leaders office." he finally pulls his lips back but his body still pressed to mine and one of his hands still caressing my cheek. He slightly brushes his thumb to my lips and stares at me at that moment I realize: I kissed him back.
I kissed him back with the same passion, desperation and hunger. "This is your floor, and I have to go. " he says in a low and husky voice slightly breathless. I walk out of the elevator and face him. We stare in silence at each other and then the door closes, and he's gone with me standing there by myself.
