I open my eyes to fog and a sharp pain in my head that lasts for a minute. No. Not fog, Lights. My eyes adjust to the Light, I'm lying on a bed. Tilting my head to my right I feel slightly nauseous. I noticed I'm in a white room, with no windows. Nothing. Just white walls. A bed on which I'm lying, two chairs facing each other with a table in the middle.
Events of last night flood in. A wicked smile makes its way on my face. An insane smile.
Maybe I'm going mad.
Or better. I'm already mad. I stare at the ceiling.
My name is Tris Prior. I am 19 years old. I was in war. My parents died. I killed Will. The bureau hates me.
My name is Tris Prior. And I remember everything.I hear the door open and a man walks in. David. He smiles at me kindly. I sit up on the bed at stare at him.
"Please sit on the chair."
"Why?" I demand.
"You must be very confused. We won't harm you."
I roll my eyes and sit on the couch. David seems confused with my attitude.
"Now. Everything we did was for you own good."
I just stare at him.
"You don't need to worry, we're good people--"
"Shut up." I snap. David seems confused.
"I. Remember. Everything." I say through my gritted teeth, temper rising slowly.
His expression was as I expected. Shocked.
"I suppose you know everything." says David
"I know that you kept me alive but I don't know how and I know you took my memory but I don't know for what crappy reason."
He gazes at me amused.
" and I would appreciate an explanation."
"Fine. Ask."
"How am I alive?"
He take a deep breath,"As you know you are the strongest divergent that has ever existed after your mother, and losing the strongest divergent is not something we want to let happen so, as soon as you loss conciseness we carried you to the healing center and removed the bullet. We worked on you until your body was stable enough to be put out of healing for a while.
"We transferred your body on the metal table for everyone to see, good thing no one checked your pulse. After everyone had seen you and had left, we transferred you back to the healing center. We put you on a strong doze of healing serum, and because of your pure genes it worked better. unfortunately. . . Your few hours on that metal table took you to coma. You woke up after 4 months."
"And what about the ashes?"
"Oh, that was just burnt wood and paper."
"But. . .why didn't you send me back? To Chicago?"
"Revenge was the reason." says another voice. His voice. The person who betrayed me.
"Is there nothing we can do?" questions David in a sad voice.
"No David. And you may leave." orders Matthew. David gives me a sad look and leaves.
"Revenge? How did you get your revenge by taking my memories and sending me to another city?"
"That wasn't revenge. It was a part of the argument."
Argument?
"You see Tris, you being the strongest divergent, David didn't want to kill you and I wanted to. He said he would just heal you and send you back. So I convinced him that sending you back would lead to another war. I convinced him you were dangerous.
And you being dangerous I suggested we'd kill you, but he didn't listen. Finally we settled on an argument: we'll let you live, but in another experiment with no memories."
"My parents, from Manhattan. . .?"
"They were a part of the plan."
"David doesn't look like the one in charge now. "
"I became in charge a year ago. " he states proudly.
"If you became in charge, why didn't you just order me back from Manhattan?"
He looks annoyed,"Oh, you know. Legal stuff, anyways Genevive and Ethan had got too attached to you."
"If it was legal documents that kept you from taking me, why am I here now? "
He seems proud of himself,"Do you think Zeke, Christina and Shauna just landed there?"
I stare in shock as I register the words.
"I sent them as supervisors knowing it would trigger some memory."
"I-I don't understand. Why would yo--"
"Because I want to kill you! The agreement clearly stated that we will not kill you if your not found as a threat. And now that your memory is triggered, you are a threat, " he pulls out a gun as the guards get hold of me, "and I get to kill you."
I try to fight but it's of no use. They're to strong.
"Don't you want to kill me with pain. A gun would do it quickly." I suggest hoping to buy myself some time.
"I'm not stupid Prior. Waiting to kill you at the right time gives you time. And giving you time is suicide."
"At least tell me what have I done to make you hate me so much? "
He smirks, "Do you really think my name is Matthew? "
Huh?
"My name is Jason Matthews, brother to Sam Matthews. Son's of Jeanine Matthews."
Sam.
No.
It can't be."Know I hope you understand," he points the gun towards me, "Why I want to kill you."
After going through so much, is this how my end is? Did I get the opportunity to live only to die again? I suppose this indeed is my end. The point is to die with memories not dreams. And I have plenty of memories.
"Good bye Tris."
I know I have been forgiven for all I have done. But will I be able to forgive myself again? Will I be able to forgive myself for doing sins again? And my biggest sin: Tobias. Will I?
I close my eyes and brace myself for my end.
Then, Matthew pulls the trigger.
