I warily followed behind the two gang members as they showed me the outskirts of town.
“Is there anyone to be afraid of?” I asked innocently.
“Don’t get mixed up in the gang problems missy. That won’t be too good for your health,” He chuckled.
“Well, my parents will be worried! Thank you so much for your tour,” I smiled.
“Be careful getting home now missy,” He smiled and they disappeared into the shadows, no doubt watching us. I walked for a few blocks and saw they were no longer following us. Emily and I hopped onto the roof of a building and silently located and followed them to an abandoned mining shaft. We shared a silent nod and slunk back to the center of the city.
“This is huge!” I said, peeling off all of my makeup.
“What do we tell the council?” Emily asked.
“Nothing right now,” I said.
“What? Why wouldn’t we tell them?” Emily asked.
“You wouldn’t believe how many secrets I keep until the right moment,” I said.
“What do we tell them then?” Emily asked.
“We went through a lovely walk through the worst part of town. We saw no one suspicious,” I offered.
“Fair game,” She sighed. We walked back to town and I pulled off my itchy wig.
“What’s the next part of your plan?” Emily asked as we approached the castle.
“We do nothing,” I said.
“What?” She asked again.
“They’ll be very curious about the new girls in town who they see once and then they disappear. If that fails, we arrange a “chance meeting” and push for more details about the gang, arousing suspicion. Then, we disappear having the same effect as the first part,” I said.
“How long have you been sitting on that plan?” Emily stared in amazement.
“A few minutes,” I shrugged.
“There you girls are,” Colonel Harrison Roberts exclaimed with gusto.
“Here we are,” I smiled.
“Your father requested an audience with our most beloved daughters,” He smiled through clenched teeth. Not many council members supported my father’s decision.
“Well we must not keep him waiting,” I shook my head.
“Did you encounter anything dangerous?” He asked.
“Nothing out of the ordinary,” I whispered.
We walked down to the bunker and I decided to take the liberty or memorizing the escape path. We walked into the same metal door which I distinguished from the others because the lock shape was different. It was a tiny detail but it could be important.
“Good job girls. What did you find?” My father asked.
“Apparently three members had the stuffing beat out of them the other day,” I said.
“That must have been humiliating. Did you find out who it was?” General Harrisford asked.
“No, they spotted us first,” I said feeling Emily tense up at his question.
“They said nothing of their gang after that?” My father asked.
“Not a word,” I answered.
“Well, what are you going to do next?” Colonel Roberts asked.
“We wait,” I said.
“Why?” Sir Dubois asked. He sounded like he was smelling a dead pig.
“I see,” My father nodded, “Proceed with caution.” We were dismissed and we left a room full odd dummies with astounded looks and a smug king.
“What now?” Emily whispered.
“We wait,” I repeated.
“I thought that was to shut up the Council,” She asked.
“It is and it isn’t,” I said.
“What?” Emily asked.
“Regroup tomorrow in the courtyard,” I said.
“Whatever,” Emily laughed and we parted ways.
