Strong Enough

Chapter 10

"I think I'm pregnant" the words hung in the air, Trudy struggled to respond. She could see the anguish on Kim's face, dark circles under her eyes and she looked as if she'd lost thirty pounds.

"Pregnant?" Trudy asked, "have you taken a test?"

Kim grabbed a tissue from the box, "No, I'm afraid" the last thing she wanted was that monster's child growing inside her.

"Oh, Kim. We need to find out" Trudy consoled her "I assume Adam doesn't know"

Kim shook her head, "I can't tell him, he'll hate me"

"No he won't, Kim you need to talk to him, tell him" Trudy explained, "is there a chance it could be Adam's?"

Kim stood and went to look out the window, "I suppose but that monster raped me over and over again" her mind flashing back to it all. She couldn't escape it, the whistle of a train in the distance made her skin crawl.  She shivered as the flashbacks assaulted her all over again.

"I'm not telling him Trudy and you can't either" her tone was stern, "he can't know"

Trudy went to her, "Kim, if you're pregnant you won't be able to hide it for long. Why don't I go get one of those home tests for you, yea?"

"Please" Kim responded, still leery of leaving the house on her own, "you'll do that for me?"

Trudy smiled as she grabbed her purse, "Absolutely "

Kevin tossed the pizza on Adam's desk, "Eat up brother" he pulled his desk chair next to Adam's desk, "let's go, I ain't playing you need to eat" he lifted the lid and put a slice on a plate for Adam, and one for himself.

Adam tilted his chair back, "I'm not hungry" he returned his focus to the computer screen in front of him, Jeremiah Miller's mug shot staring back at him.

"What are you working on?"

"Nothing" Adam lied, "just dicking around since I'm stuck at this desk"

Kevin was suspicious of Adam, he quickly spun the screen around, "Bullshit. What the fuck are you doing man?"

Adam stood, "I don't know, alright. I need to do something, I need to fix it"

"Fix what? He's locked up for a long time"

He had his hands on his hips, his jaw clenched, "I need to fix her" he knew she was broken. That monster had destroyed her soul, he had taken so much from her and left her with nothing.

Kevin was speechless, "I don't know what to say Adam"

"That's the problem Kev, I don't either" he turned and went down the stairs, he needed air, afraid his rage would consume him.

"Did you do it?" Trudy asked her when Kim came out of the bathroom.

"Yea" she had left the test on the counter, "takes a few minutes for the results" she sat on the couch, "I know it though, I'm pregnant" she had hidden her morning sickness successfully from Adam, "I've been throwing up, I can just feel it"

"You need to see a doctor" Trudy grabbed her hand, "and you need to tell Adam"

"Tell him what?" Her anger returned, "tell him, 'babe, I'm pregnant but it's not yours, it's that monster's' it will crush him. He won't look at me the same anymore" she cried, "that monster has stolen so much from me"

"Only if you let him" she knew she needed to get through to her somehow, "I don't think you're giving Adam enough credit, he loves you"
