He took a deep breath as he sat on the bed, he needed to calm his nerves before he spoke to her again, he needed to get it right. He needed to make her understand, he ran his hands through his hair and returned to the living room.
Kim was on the couch her legs bouncing up and down, he knew she was just as nervous as he was, she looked up at him, "it's on the kitchen table"
Adam sat on the coffee table in front of her, he placed his hands on her thighs, "It can wait a few minutes, I need to tell you something" he could see her eyes become filled with tears.
She started to panic "Adam?" she felt her heart race, "what are you saying?"
He smiled, "Relax, it's good" he took her hand in his, "I need to say this before we open that envelope" he paused, he inhaled, "I want you to know that I love you more than anyone I've ever loved, you're my reason for living. You bring out the very best in me, you make me a better man"
Kim wiped at her eyes, "I love you too"
"Just let me finish, okay?" He could feel his eyes begin to betray him as they filled with tears, he ignored them and continued, he placed his hand on her stomach, "This little baby in here has my heart, regardless of its DNA. I will love this child with all my heart, everything I do I will do with his best interest in mind. I will make sure he's safe, and that he knows he's loved" he reached into his pocket and pulled the ring out, "I want him to know how much I love him and you. I want to spend the rest of my life with you, I want to be the one you come home to, I want to be your safe spot, will you marry me?"
Kim couldn't believe it, "Adam?"
He laughed, "Yea?"
"That was beautiful" she smiled as she kissed him, "yes I will marry you"
Adam slipped the ring on her finger and hugged her, "I love you so much"
Kim glanced down at the ring on her hand, "How did I get so lucky?"
"I'm the lucky one" Adam replied.
Kim smiled at him, "you referred to the baby as a boy, do you think it's a boy?"
Adam shrugged, "I don't know, just felt weird saying 'it' all the time" he stood and went to the kitchen table and picked the envelope up, "you ready?"
Kim went and stood behind him, "I guess"
Adam carefully opened the envelope and read it.
Kim watched in heartbreak as his face crumpled and he slid to the floor in tears, "Adam, baby what does it say?" She asked, he was unable to answer her, he dropped the letter on the floor and covered his face with his hands. His body convulsing as he sobbed.
She sat beside him on the floor and picked the letter up and began to read it.
