They

I met his dad first.

He opened the door for us the moment the car stopped in their driveway.  Their house .. it was strangely normal. It wasn't at all what I expected.  I don't know why but for some reason I imagined a mansion - a huge house with intricate wall patterns and chandeliers.  But it was nothing like that at all.  Yes it's big.  It has to be considering he has 4 siblings.  And yes, it has a driveway... but it was located on the edge of the city.  They have a small garden in front with a huge tree and a small porch. They also had a little dog house.  It made me less nervous.

"Well, hello there."  His tone implied that I was an unexpected guest. I looked at DJ but he was already going for a hug with his dad.

"Hey Pa! What's up?"

"I'm good.  But I think you're better." He - DJ's dad - waggled his eyebrows and I can't help but think it's about me but at the same time I don't quite understand.

"Paaaaa."  Dj whined. Then, quickly introduced me.

"This is Kath."

"Hmmm. Hey Kath, It's a pleasure to have you with us."  He extended his arms to shake my hands and I took it saying, "Pleasure to meet you Mr. Padilla. I'm sorry for intruding on your holiday celebrations..."  I was rambling, I know, but I can't help feeling that somehow my presence is a huge unwelcome surprise.

But he cut me off and said, "Romel, please call me Romel. I'm pretty sure we'll see you on more holidays... no need to be formal."

Then he drew his hand out of mine and grabbed me for a hug much like he did with his son.

Suddenly, I feel so welcome.
