 A/N:

This is where things slowly start to pick up. I know WTD literally throws you straight into the action and doesn't bother with a slow build-up (which some people hate) but it suits the story. The song Waking the Demon is fast-paced so that's kind of why I wanted a fast-paced story. The sequel's going to be much slower with the build-up. I'm still in the process of editing! There are so many things I want to change about this story, it's a bit ridiculous!

Jay's pov:

"Death to the Dark Angel!" The men in veils start chanting. The Dark Angel? I look at the girl. She doesn't look like she'd be one. The Adlet is me.

"What's going on?" The girl is getting paler by the second.

"Don't be scared. The Men in Veils are the spirits of rejects. The spirits of people who have died alone with no loved ones in their life at all. They target young people and scare them. They turn your fear into power and then they kill you,"

I explain to her. Her eyes widen and she seems even more scared.

The Men in Veils slowly turn their heads towards her. She clutches my arm and I glance down at her.

I shake her off of me and stand up straight, looking the Veils in the eye. I clench my muscles and close my eyes, focusing my energy on becoming an Adlet. Slowly I start to feel myself sprouting fur.  I let out a yell of pain as my fingernails turn into claws, my teeth lengthen and sharpen. After an agonising minute, I know I've fully transformed. I can't talk in my Adlet form but I still keep my mind so I don't go mental with killing and slaughtering.

Lissa's pov:

Oh my God. Jay is a fucking hellhound. Or some kind of creature. He looks a bit of a mixture between a vampire and a werewolf.

I don't know which I'm more afraid of, the freaks surrounding me or Jay himself. Jay starts attacking the men in veils and I hoist myself up into the oak tree to be safe. I climb up into the branches and catch glimpses of the mini battle below me.

The freaks are surprisingly strong and I can see a few cuts on Jay's beast form. When I'm as high up as I can go, I very nearly fall out of the tree.

Sitting on one of the branches is what is probably the leader of the Men in Veils. He is staring straight out over the distance, not looking at me. But he slowly turns his head towards me. I remember what Jay says. How they turn my fear into power and kill me.

But there's something about him that terrifies me. I can feel my heart beating faster than it ever has and the blood pulsing in my temples. The leader must sense this and I can traces of a grin behind the veil. My hands are sweaty and I'm shaking. He's going to kill me.

"Jay!" I scream like a fool. "The leader's up here!"

I look down to see if Jay has heard me. When I look down I notice how high up I am. The leader senses this and he grabs hold of my arm. I yell out, terrified and try to break free. This causes me to wobble on my branch. The leader tightens his grip. I can feel tears forming in my eyes, knowing the leader is going to kill me himself or that I'm going to fall. Quit crying, fool. It'll just make that freak stronger. But somehow the encouraging words in my mind aren't enough.

"Please...please don't kill me," I whisper. The leader lets go of my arm. For a moment I'm relieved and then I realise something. The branch I'm sitting on is breaking. I can see that it's coming detatched from the trunk. The leader senses this and stares at me intently.

"Jay!" I scream, louder this time. "Jay, please!" It's no use.

The last thing I remember is the feeling of branches scraping my body and cascading to the ground.

Moose's pov:

"Where the fuck is Jay? He's meant to be here by now," Padge says impatiently.

"He's probably in town trying to impress a bunch of girls," Matt rolls his eyes. I'm about to say something when we hear a scream.

"Jay!" We hear the voice scream. Our eyes meet up.

"Is Jay hurt?" Padge asks worriedly.

"He can't be. If he spots danger he'll turn straight into an Adlet," I shake my head. We hear the screaming again.

"I'm going to see what it is. The voice sounds familiar," Matt gets up. We hear the voice scream again and Matt's eyes widen. "It's her!"

He shouts and takes off into the forest. Matt may not have super-speed like Padge but he can go fast when he needs to.

I'm not as fast as Matt and Padge but I'm stronger. If anything, I'm the strongest out of all of them.

We end up in a clearing with a huge oak tree in the centre.

My heart sinks. It's the Men in Veils. Just our luck. Even worse, we see Jay sitting underneath the oak tree, with a girl who looks, well, dead. Three Veils are surrounding them. Matt is there in seconds, grabbing the Veils in headlocks, choking them and snapping their necks.

"Is she OK?" Padge asks Jay worriedly.

"I hope so. I saw her fall from the tree. I don't know where the leader is. She's the Dark Angel,"

"She's the Dark Angel?" I ask disbelievingly. I was shocked enough when I discovered Amy Lee, the Witch, was in the Circle but children? I didn't think it was possible. The girl's eyes flicker open and I recognise her as the girl from the bakery. She recognises us too.

"W-what happened?" She mumbles.

"You fell from the tree," Matt says. "And you're a Dark Angel,"

"A Dark Angel?" The girl asks disbelievingly. "What's that?"

"Listen carefully, Lissa," Padge sits down next to her. So that's her name. Lissa. "And we'll explain everything to you,"
