A Fine Line

The next few minutes passed in unbearable anticipation.

"So, how are you?" Daphne shyly said to her mother.

"Worried, my baby, but I know everything will turn out well in the end, no matter when it may come." Her tiny smile showed great strength that had been worn down over years and years of worry that would hopefully be resolved.

"Hey, I see some kind of light coming from the sky, should I be worried?" Onca walked in pointing behind her back nonchalantly.

"They are here!" and so we all ran out leaving a unsure Onca.

"So I'll take that as a maybe." she said, finally following alone.

"There they are! Give him to me you wicked man!" my mother shouted, running out of the shelter of rumble after telling us to stay back. She ran out waving her arms, tiny tears ran down her face. The small ship started to descend from the sky. Bright landing lights illuminated the woman underneath. The lights started to get smaller, turning into little circles on the ground. At first I thought that they were just getting closer to land, that was until I noticed the ship was at a standstill.

My mother noticed what I did at the same time, though it was too late. The lights circled in on her, turning a blood red. Then my life seemed to slow down, go backwards. Everything flashed before my eyes. My wonderful childhood on a beautiful, perfect planet planted in the most unknown place in space. The futuristic colony was perfect, only one thing threatened it, other people. My parents sent me off with the knowledge of the planet at a young age that way if the population was destroyed I would be able to re inhabit paradise. Once I was gone things took a drastic turn for the worse. The planet was starting to be hunted down. Then one group found it. They destroyed everything, but all the planet's people escaped. My sister was flown away at the beginning of the fight when their was still hope of victory. My mother and father were separated when everyone fled in worried groups. Soon after all life on the planet died of a meteor shower, that was when my mother found the planet again. She began trying to send out signals to all people she could to return, but no one responded, only my father.

They hadn't seen each other in years, my mother had been looking forward to it since the moment they were torn away. Then my eyes flashed back to only a second ago. Instead of seeing a women waving down her husband I witnessed a sorrowful women waving her arms for her love, for her life. Then her body rippled and fell. My mouth widened for a slow motion scream I couldn't hear. Tears stung at my eyes as I watched the only person I couldn't remember turn into silence. My chin bunched up and trembled while I stared at my mother, stolen by fate. She had left me, but it was what kept me alive. A small ball of rage started in my stomach, how she stole my life from me, we could have been together forever! But it wasn't her fault, nothing was meant to turn out like this. She didn't try to leave me, she saved me. My fire was put out as peaceful doves fluttered through me.

Finally taking in the scene I noticed that Onca had shot down the spaceship. That everyone had pulled me to my mother, gasping in her last taste of life. "Vela come closer, I need to hear you. Stop the crying though, dear. I can see your smile, it was beautiful, please let me see it one more time."

"Is this goodbye?" I cried trying to bring up a small curve in my lips.

"There is no such thing as goodbye my daughter, I thought I'd be saying this later in life but I guess there is never time." She conquered a true smile which cause a small tremble in my throat as I gagged in air.

"What will I do without you?"

"You have others. They can help lead you when you need help, and you can help them when they need leading." she started a rapid surge of breaths,"I'm sorry! I never meant to tear down your world! Just forgive me and I'll fall to sleep! I will dream forever if I know you'll let me watch out forever, otherwise this world will be sucked into a nightmare for me! Just.. just.. say you'll never leave, then embrace me for the last time." and with a rasping breath I hugged her.

"I forgive you for everything you did and didn't do, you could never be evil in my eyes." I withdrew my arms and backed up. I looked into her eyes reflecting the stars above. After a moment I noticed that she wasn't blinking. "She's gone! It's over! I'll never be able to save anyone!" my body started to shake uncontrollably as I fell to the ground. My tears fed the soil as I imagined failure, death, and a fine line splitting everything apart.

"We're here for you." Aquila said, hugging me from behind. I drifted into her warmth and let all worries flow out through my eyes.
