As we drove down the unpaved streets, I pulled out my disaster of a phone and opened my messages. None. None from anyone I'd left behind so far. Nonetheless, I pulled up Farkle's phone number and sent him a message.
Maya: hey farkle.. i had to go, i figured you'd be the only one to understand. i have a ride, don't worry. stay out as late as you want. i'll be fine by myself at the house.
I clicked off the power button, only to have my phone glow back to life not 2 seconds later with a response.
Farkle: Maya? Are you okay? I'll leave right now if you want me to.
Maya: NO! STAY! have fun! i'll see you when you get home alright, i just need to be alone and i couldn't stand being in there anymore.
Farkle: Aww, Maya. I'm so sorry I was on my phone the whole time. Riley was just calling to know how the trip was so far. I'll stay here, but if you need ANYTHING at all, text me that very instant and I'll get there within 10 minutes.
Maya: ok, you have fun
Farkle: OH! And Maya?
Maya: Yeah?
Farkle: Was that Joshua Matthews sitting with you at the bar?
Maya: Yeah, it was, actually.. He's my ride home
Farkle: Okay.. Just be careful, ok Maya?
I frowned at Farkle's distrust of me with Josh. He was just being protective, that's all. I brushed it off.
Maya: of course i will, don't get drunk!
Farkle: Do you know who you're talking to?
Maya: just teasing.. alright bye.
Farkle: Bye Maya
We pulled up at the house at the moment I finished talking to Farkle. I shut my phone off, shoved it in my back pocket, and grabbed my purse.
"Thanks so much, Josh," I smiled. "You have no idea how much I appreciate it."
I grabbed the handle and yanked the door open, stepping one of my feet on the grassy ground.
"Maya, wait.." Josh said, clearly in a strained voice.
I turned around and leaned down to see inside the car, and see his face.
"Yeah?" I replied, curious at what he had to say.
"Uh.. If you ever need anything.. ever... I'll be there for you, okay?" he said with complete sincerity. "Just tell me and I'll help in any way I can. You mean a lot to me, Maya. I don't want anyone to hurt you, even if I'm not your boyfriend anymore."
I stood there in complete silence waiting to regain my composure.
"Josh.." I began.
"Yeah?"
"You're aware we can't be together?" I restated.
"I am," he said dejectedly.
"Well as long as you know that.. I love you," I said, unsure of how he'd deal with it.
After waiting for 10 seconds or so for an answer and getting nothing but a shocked face, I slowly closed the door and went up the walkway into the house.
I waved from the doorway, and then entered, disappearing from Josh's view. Breathing a huge sigh of relief, a smile spread across for a reason I had no answer for. I sprinted to my room and pulled out my phone, pricking my finger in my haste. Riley was the only one I could talk to about this.
Maya: RILEYYYYYYYYYY
Maya: YOU GOTTA ANSWER THINGS HAVE GONE DOWN
I was slightly confused why on earth Riley Matthews wasn't picking up her phone. The thing was practically glued to her hand, so either she was ignoring me or she was in the middle of something important. I tried one last time.
Maya: Riley? Just call me when you get these messages.
We were 8 hours ahead our time and it was about 8:30, so there was no plausible reason why Riley wouldn't be awake. Deciding not to worry about it, I figured I'd just eat some of the food from the pantry and watch Keeping Up With The Kardashians to pass the time.
Three hours passed as I watched the mindless television to keep me occupied. It hadn't even occurred to me to worry about wherever the hell Farkle, Lucas, and Zay had ended up. I suppose it didn't really matter; they could take care of themselves. As I glanced at the clock and realized it was already 11:30, I decided to try Riley once more.
As the phone rang in the even tone that managed to drive me insane each time, I began to imagine fates that would happen by the end of summer. No matter what I dreamt up, nothing seemed anywhere close to reasonable. Things were just too screwy. A happy ending just seemed too far away to reach. We were only human, and a heart and a soul were all we'd got. There was only so much that we could do, no matter how much we wish for things found impossible.
"Maya? What's wrong?" The muffled voice of Riley sang out.
"Nothing. Everything. It's so good to hear your voice, Riles. So much has happened.." I began to list.
"I'm glad your fine, Maya, but why didn't you just text me? I was so worried!" she said in a clearly concerned voice.
"I did! Didn't you get them?" I questioned, beyond baffled.
"Nope," she answered firmly.
"Here, lemme check right now.." I explained.
After scrolling through my recent messages, I searched for the distressed help texts I had sent out hours ago. Of course, being the bumbling idiot I am, I saw that the messages intended for Riley's eyes, had mistakenly been sent to Rachel Orenburg from back home.
"I'm such an idiot, I sent it to the wrong person.." I spoke in understandable disgust.
"Oh peaches.." she said in sarcastic disappointment. "Anyway.. What was it EXACTLY that was so important to tell me?"
"There was another Josh sighting. He was at the pub -" I began before being interrupted.
"Pub, Maya? You guys all went to a bar?" Riley said in disbelief.
"Don't worry, Riley. None of us had more than a couple sips, I'm sure. We can handle ourselves.." I said assuringly.
"Fine. But continue. My uncle Josh.." she inquired.
"Right. So he was there when we sat down and, after me being the only one sitting at the booth when Zay, Farkle, and Lucas moved around, he approached me and-" I was interrupted yet again, by the chiming of the loud doorbell.
"Gimme a sec, Riles.. They're home," I said.
"Wait, Maya. You weren't with them?" Riley asked in even larger disbelief.
"Let me explain everything in a minute, will ya?" I asked as I dashed down the stairs in my flannel pajama pants and Stanford sweatshirt.
Taking the stairs two at a time and surprisingly not falling, I finally arrived at the bottom of the long banister and I raced to the door. Opening up the mahogany door, I was absolutely shocked.
"Riley, I'm going to need to call you back..." I stuttered as I hung up the phone.
