Edward's POV
I ran through the forest with Emmett and Esme by my side. We left the house 5 minutes ago to go hunt. Our trip to Northern Alaska would take another 10 minutes. We were in Alaska visiting Tanya, Kate, Irina, Carmen, and Eleazar. It was our last day and after hunting we would go straight to our home in northern Canada. We had already said goodbye to the Denali's. I was grateful to leave after spending 2 weeks there. Tanya wouldn't leave me alone for 5 short minutes. Whenever we visited, she would be trying to get me fall in love with her. No matter how many times I would tell her, in a kind, polite way, that I wasn't interested, she would never listen.
As soon we back to our home in Canada, we would pack everything we needed and move to northern Maine. We would stay there for 8 years, then we would move to Michigan's upper pennisula. After another 8 years we will move to Forks, Washington. We had to stay places where it was cloudy and rarely had sunlight. If people saw us in the sun, they would now what we are, or at least know that we were dangerous. That would not play well with the Volturi. In the meantime we had to hunt then meet up with Carlisle, Rosalie, Alice, and Jasper at our home.o
Esme and Emmett ran in different directions bringing me back to reality. We were in our chosen hunting spot. I stopped and closed my eyes, breathing through my nose deeply. I caught the scent of a mountain lion to my right and took off running. I ran up a tree and looked down at the mountain loin. It was pacing and growling at a bush. I listened and heard a faint heartbeat from inside the bush. There was also a small whimpering. It was a human child!
The mountain lion backed up getting ready to pounce. It threw itself at the child , but it was too slow. I launched myself at it and grabbed its waist. I heard the crunch of its rib bones as I brought the large cat to the ground. I sank my teeth into its throat and drank it dry of its blood. I stood up and decided to check on the child.
I walked over to the bush that was so thick with leaves that I couldn't see through it to the child. I pulled back the leaves and looked at the ch.ild. I was surprised. It was an infant! It looked to be only a few weeks old. Her eyes were closed, it was a girl, she was wearing pink clothes. She was whimpering, her lip stuck out in a pout. I was amazed that she wasn't crying. I knew she was cold, there was snow all around us.
I picked her up and wrapped my jacket around her tiny fragile body. I held her to my chest in my arms and started rocking her back and forth. Her eyes snapped open and she looked at me with the loveliest chocolate brown eyes I had ever seen. Usually brown eyes are flat, but I felt I could look through them to her sweet innocent soul. She seemed exceptionally focused for a baby her age. She wouldn't look away from mine. She smiled a little toothless smile that I just had to return.
While still rocking her, I walked back to find Esme and Emmett. I started to grow impatient and started running. I looked down at the infant in my arms, expecting her to cry from the speed, but she never looked away from me. I heard Emmett's thoughts as he was looking for me and Esme, and ran in his direction.
I ran for another 5 seconds and stopped 15 feet from him. "Where have you" he trailed off seeing the child in my arms.
