Riley just stares at me, like she's afraid to answer. I'm about to apologize and tell her that she doesn't have to answer it, but she starts talking first.

"I've never told anyone," she mumbles, dropping her gaze and picking at a broken nail.

"It's okay, you don't have to tell me if you don't --"

"I dated my friend, Lucas, once." She cuts me off, obviously wanting to tell me. "While I was with him, I tried to be happy, but I just didn't feel anything toward him. Next, I dated Charlie Gardener. I didn't feel anything with him either."

"So.... You're gay?" I ask slowly. I'm used to being around people who are open with who they are, so I feel awkward and don't know how to react in this situation.

A tear rolls down her cheek, and I realize that she probably has homophobic parents. "I've tried telling myself that I just need to find a perfect guy, but.... in the back of my mind, I always knew that wasn't true."

"It's okay, Riley. What about girls?"

She sighs, wiping the tears from her cheeks. "I've always told myself that it's normal to think other girls are pretty, but it's not normal to feel butterflies when Alyson Montgomery talks to you."

"You know what's not normal?" I ask, hoping to perk her up.

"What?"

"Being attracted to a lizard." Riley laughs through her tears, proving my mission successful. "But being attracted to a girl is perfectly normal."

She nods, starting to believe it and (hopefully) starting to accept herself. "Do you like girls, Maya?"

"Girls, and boys, and everyone else...." She laughs again, and I smile. "So basically, I'm pansexual."

"Cool." She drops backward onto the bed with a sigh. "I'm tired."

"Then go to sleep," I respond, standing up and starting for the closet where I, unfortunately, have to sleep every night.

"Wait. Can you sleep with me?" Her brown eyes are huge, and I can't say no.

"Okay." I turn off the light and climb into bed with her, both of us buried under her blankets. "Goodnight, Riley."

"Goodnight, Maya."

(Also everyone needs to tweet the GMW writers and ask if Rilaya will be canon in s3 (the season of fEELINGS) because I need answers.)
