"I vow my life to you."

It's whispered into my hair, so quiet I hardly catch it.

And tears start to pour from my eyes like waterfalls.

"Maya, what's wrong?" Riley pulls away from me quickly, a concerned look in her chocolate eyes. "Did I say something I shouldn't have...?"

Despite the tears, a laugh comes from my mouth. "No, not at all. You said all the right things, Riles, thank you." I wrap my arms back around her waist, squeezing tightly. "No one has ever loved me that much. I didn't even know what love was until I met you."

We just stand there for a while, wrapped in each other's arms, nothing but love moving between us. "I love you, Maya."

It hits hard every time she says it. Like a tsunami of good feelings, good feelings that I never thought I'd experience. "I love you, Riley."

"Maya, we need to get out of here before police show up." I simply nod in agreement. "You wanna lead the way, Peaches?"

I smile at the nickname, shaking my head. Riley smiles back, grabbing my hand and linking our fingers together before leading me through the empty alleyway.

Eventually we come to a homeless shelter, curling up on a bed together the way we did that first night. Except things are a little different now.

"Riley, I'm hungry."

She sits up, pulling a crushed peanut butter sandwich out of her jacket pocket. "Here, this is the only thing I could take from Feeny's house."

I take it from her hand, slowly pulling it from the baggie. I almost take a bite before tearing the sandwich in half, holding one half out for Riley. She just stares at it. "Maya, I want you --"

"Riles. Eat, please." I know my health is her first priority, but it's mutual. I need her healthy and fed as well.

Defeated, Riley takes the sandwich half out of my hand, biting into it and chewing slowly.

"Thank you, Riley. For everything."

And with that said, I start to eat.
